SOURCE: TomTom One 3rd edition error

I have just had the flashing X problem after updating my Tom Tom One for the first time. I went to the tomtom support http://www.tomtom.com/support/support.php?ID=2 and selected search by keyword. I typed in 'white cross' and found the solution. This involved deleting various files and installing a file called Applications from TomTom Home. So far it seems to have worked.

SOURCE: photos of tomtom one power on fix

Attached is a sequence of photos on how to get to and change the power control chip - the one that is probably damaged. This is for the Tom Tom I repaired and yours could be different however, there will be a power control chip of some kind (check out the part numbers to see which one it is) and it will be this that is damaged and will need replacing. The Power control chip is the hardest to replace as you cannot get to the 'legs' to solder them. To remove the old one, just apply a large soldering iron bit (with a blob of solder on it to make good thermal contact to the top of the chip) and heat up the whole chip until it is free. Lift it off straight away with tweezers. Clean up the solder pads with solder wick and then apply a SMALL amount of solder paste to each pad. It is improtant that this is a SMALL amount and is equal on all pads so the new chip sits square and true when you put it on. Make sure the chip is in the middle of the pad patern and push it into place. Now for the tricky part....either usa a large soldering iron and heat the chip until it melts the solder paste and drops into place or, use a hot air gun with a small nozzle and do the same thing. Great care needs to be taken to ensure you do not heat up the near by parts so the soldering iron is best but you have to remove it as soon as the chip falls into place. The surface tension of the solder should centre the chip up if it is slightly out but you need to get it possitioned as good as you can before you heat it up. Take care not to move the chip as you heat it. You will need a fine bit in the soldering iron for the diode and any other parts you may need.

You should start with TT1 and work through to TT7.

As well as this chip, if the power supply went high (12 volts) then the zener diode on the input to this chip will also have been destroyed - you should see signs of this just by looking at the device (see photo TT6)

The most difficult bits are: -

Opening the connector to the LCD. This can be done by gently lifting up the PCB to see the connector on the back and then pushing up the 2 ends of the connectors white locking bar. Replacement is also very tricky but with care it can be done. As an alternative, you can remove the LCD complete by gently flexing the plastic surround to it and freeing the display from the case. It is then easy to disconnect and re-connect the LCD to the PCB.

Removing the tin cover from the back of the PCB so that you can get to the power control chip. This takes time and a hot soldering iron with good solder wick to remove the solder. Having liberated a couple of lugs you can remove the others by gently lifting the cover near to a lug and heating that lug to pull it through the PCB. Don't burn your fingers though!

The parts are easy to obtain from either Farnell or RS Components - RS have trade counters you can go to and Farnell have a retail side CPC you can find them at http://cpc.farnell.com/. If you have problems let me know and I will see what I can do.

SOURCE: tomtom one xl usb socket broken off main pcb

I have gone around this problem by removing the internal battery, and soldering a female power connector to it.I now it on 3 aa batteries, alkaline cells givbe me an autonomy of about an hour, maybe duracells will give a bit more duration.

When i have time ,I will work on splicing the wires on the cigar plug adaptor and use that as a permanent power source. The wires for the Lipo cell are Red positive, solder this to the yellow wire( probably a battery gauge wire) and black ground.

Hope this helps

Does the Tomtom fuse the car sockets?

It would take a heavy current draw to fuse the cigar lighter. Rather than fusing, the problem is likely a fuse which has opened.

My tomtom 920 simply won't turn on, I used it yesterday and it was fine, though it did warn me that the battery is very low. I have charged it for 1hr but it still won't come on. What could be the problem...

The batery is finished, even if you plug it in the cigar lighter and the green light goes on, your TOMTOM will still not work when the batery is dead..get one real cheap on ebay.
Good luck

My tomtom one no longer recognises the car charger.I have purchased a new one from a dealer and it won''r make it charge.I can only bharge it with my bomputer hook up cable...what can I do now?

Seeing as it charges from the computer
I doubt that it is the tomtom.

I would suspect either the outlet in your car or a posible problem with the lead even if it is new.

The tomtom was working fine. Then I think I left

The 910 has a small reset button in the area of the socket. You will see a small circular notch molded into the housing near the socket. A small paperclip will fit in the reset hole. Reset the unit and it should start normally.

The car plug in works in my car, but will not work in my wife's Toyota. The socket in her car works fine with other plug ins, but will not work with the Tom Tom one.

I could not solve it on line, and I could find no phone # for TomTom on line.
I called "Tiger" and they gave me a number for TomTom. I then found that sometimes you need to buy an adaptor to use in some cars.

No sound on tom tom one

Quite common. Faulty speaker ( rob one from an old scrapper laptop theres million of them about now ) . OR ....... on some tomtoms there is an external speaker socket. This socket has an inbuilt switch that switches the internal speaker off when an external speaker is plugged in. Often the contacts on the socket wear a little or get slightly bent and stay OPEN when you unplug the external speaker resulting in NO SOUND . ..... BUT often ( not always ) you still get the tomtom drums on but no sound after that ... a good indication of this probable fault ! You need to open up the tomtom and inspect / clean / bend a little the contacts on this socket. be careful . You need special tools to open a tomtom so dont be silly thinking you can do it without the right tools. GOOD LUCK

No sound comes out of the speaker. The volume settings are correct. The sound is on, and the volume is all the way up. What can I do?

Your problem can be one of several. 1/ you have lost / deleted / corrupted the voices on your SD card. if there are no voices then you won't get any nav instructions. 2/ Your speaker has stopped working , if faulty it will need replacement. ( not unknown and common on early tomtoms ) . On other tomtom models that have an external speaker socket the socket becomes faulty. This socket has a switch that switches the internal speaker OFF when an external speaker is plugged in. If this switch is stuck OPEN then that connection to the internal speaker is lost. However , the Tomtom drums sound is connected to the speaker via a different route so doesnt get switched off by this socket switch so the drums can still be heard.
