You have a corrupted windows. You have 2 choices: perform a repair installation, or reformat your computer. Trying to find which specific component of windows got corrupted is frustrating because there are a lot of possible causes for the corruption. Save yourself the trouble and either repair or reinstall windows to cut to the chase.

My Toshiba A50 won't start. Just gives a choice between running windows normally and repairing (recommended) on the ground that it either didn't turn off correctly due to power cut or has some

Try going into safemode
After you see the Toshiba logo disappear. Press and hold the F8 button.

You should get a choice. Choose Safemode. If it loads try doing a system restore.

Unfortunately, if it does not load, then your Windows OS is too corrupted and needs to be re-installed. You will need the original disc that came with your laptop to do this.

My old emachine was turned off the wrong way and will not boot. What can I do?

File corruption can happen when power is cut from the computer. Put a Windows cd into the drive and load up the recovery console, then run CHKDSK. If you don't have a windows cd, take the hard drive out of the emachine and connect it to a working comp. Then you can run chkdsk.exe from inside windows to fix corrupted sectors.

If your computer is powering on, that is an entirely different question. Be specific.
