SOURCE: How to remove the hard drive from my dell

Hi there.
Firstly remove the power cord from the back of the desktop, then turn the unit round so the back of it is facing you, on the right hand side there may be a couple of screws and plastic catches, remove the screws and lift the plastic clips so the side panel opens up, once that is done you will be able to see the motherboard, the hard drive looks like this >>>>>e340c2b.jpegnow depending on the type of dell you have there maybe screws or green plastic strips that holds the HDD in place, if you cannot get it that way then the front panel has to be removed.
If this is the case post back and I'll tell you how remove it.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!!

I'm trying to increase hard disk space on a Dell

Hi.

The Dell Inspiron 1100 is a laptop whereas the Dell Dimension 2400 is a desktop pc.

The hard drives are incompatible because they are a different size, plus the Inspiron only supports one hard drive so you can't install a slave device. The only way to increase hard disk space is to buy a large capacity internal IDE laptop drive or an external hard drive.

Regards.

I have a PC Dell Dimension 2400 with a hard 40 GB

Basically when you install a new boot drive you need to install Windows operating system on the new hard drive, also the device drivers (eg video, audio, modem, LAN etc), your programs and data. The reason programs has to be installed is because the installation process copied DLL files to the System folders and makes changes to the registry.
You can only copy your data onto the new hard disk.
To avoid copying your data to the new hard drive, you can set up the old hard drive as second hard drive (ie. slave drive), if you delete the redundant folders and leave only the data folders then you have an adddition 40Gb of disk space.

Looks like a hard drive failure- simple as that. You can try a number of things but as far as my experiance goes the hard drive is dead. You either need a new hard drive or better a new computer.

Dont want to give false hopes...

Replacement HD

Do you know if it is SATA or IDE? If you look at your hard drive, an IDE will have a wide cable connected to the back of it. If it is SATA, it will be a small cable that connects it to the motherboard. I think it is SATA. But nonetheless, depending on the size of the hard drive you want, you can get decent hard drives in the $60 range at www.tigerdirect.com.

Thanks and please take a moment to rate as fixya. Thank you.
