SOURCE: GE refrigerator model GTH22KBRARWW will

Very possible that the defrost heater is burned out. Unplug and remove the rear wall in back of the freezer. If frozen over defrost with a hair dryer or let a bucket of hot water sit inside the freezer for a while. After defrost we need to inspect the WR51X10038 or 880036 Defrost Heater to see if it's burned out. If yes the you will need to replace the heater. If we find nothing wrong inside the freezer then we need to have a look at the mother control board. I will help you go through these test if you want, Let me know what you find, Thanks, Sea Breeze

On your model I would go straight to the defrost heater and defrost thermostat and check them first after defrosting the evaporator first with a hair drier. I have a GE side by side model gss221fphww.The freezer is icing up and the refrigerator part is not cooling well.

johnnybur64, That is a typical sign that the defrost heater and defrost thermostat need to be replaced, Those models have very little problems with the motherboard section that tells the defrost to come on. Most times just those parts defrost heater=> WR51X10101 and defrost thermostat=> WR50X10068 will be all you will need. Unplug remove rear panel and defrost with a hairdryer to speed things up. When that defrost heater burns out you can see it easily through the glass tubes, I always replace the defrost thermostat because it is cheap insurance that you will not need to go back inside. You also can find these parts here=> GE Artica Profile Technical Information

I have an older GE Profile side by side not defrosting, have continuity in element when warmed thermostat kicks off and I have replaced the timer, still not defrosting. Model #THP21PBSMWW S/N SL238841

Need to check and see if the element is heating up when it goes into defrost. If the thermostat is bad it will not go into defrost. I purchased a new heating element for my GE and it came with the element and thermostat together. Also make sure the fan is running in the freezer this moves the heat through the coil as well as the cold temp when in freeze mode.

Our GE profile freezer/frig - frig side has ice on coils

Sounds like the automatic defrost system is not working. The usual problem is the defrost heater, the defrost thermostat, or the defrost timer. If any of these parts are bad, it will not defrost.

GE TBX18BLJ --Freezer comp frosts/ices up. Defrost

The next step would be to unplug the refrigerator and remove the rear panel and defrost so that you can unplug the defrost heater on one end and check the continuity. 305175 Defrost Heater and defrost thermostat Part number 3489. If you change the defrost heater you should also change the defrost thermostat. Let me know the results. Remember above 60 degrees the defrost thermostat will show open with your OHM meter.
