I have a virus that has control of my laptop and cannot access the internet without numerous Windows Essentials Security taking control Sorry, I meant Windows Security Center

I suggest you boot your computer into 'Safe Mode with Networking". This can be done by:
-rebooting computer or turning it on if it is currently off
-when you see the bios screen begin tapping 'F8'
-this should eventually bring up a black screen with white text
-choose Safe Mode with Networking

While in safe mode you should now download the free version of MalwareBytes. Install and allow it to update. Now run a full scan and have it fix any problems that it finds. Reboot your computer and hopefully everything is back to normal.

If this doesn't work you may have to back up all your personal files to another drive and restore/reinstall the operating system.

Hope this is helpful. Let me know if you have any questions or need any further help

You may try booting in safemode.

Follow the steps:

1. Turn the computer on or Restart the computer
* Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Boot Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
* Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected (the top option)
* Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

2. Do system restore. Follow the steps tp://support.microsoft.com/kb/948247. If it do the same thing go to 3.
3. Recovery.

Actually that error is an indication of some bad sectors on the Hard drive. There is still no guarantee that the recovery will work.

Dell optiplex gx280 keeps rebooting after bluescreen

More than likely it's a software issue.

First thing you should try is booting into Safe Mode

You can do this by powering on the computer and pressing the "F8" key every few seconds.

You should get a list of choices, choose "Safe Mode"

If you can get onto the desktop please visit the Control Panel and check to see if you've got any of the devices listed with a yellow "!" mark.

Let me know what you see / happens so we can narrow down the problem.

Computer stays blank after i log on

Your PC is set to a resolution incompatible with your monitor - so it cannot display.

Start in SAFE mode (press F8 wile booting) and SAFE mode to see if it works in Windows DEFAULT setting. Then Reboot and readjust to something sensible (1280*1600, 32bit, 60Hz)

My guess is that MSoft pushed a patch or SP to your box and IT replaced the dll your monitor was using.

Goto mfg and DL and reinstall the correct drivers again

1 other possibility... your PC is sending video out the back VGA port. Look at your keyb topmost row for LCT/CRT, INT/EXT or two monitors stacked and push bothe it and the FCTN (lower left corner) to change to INT, BOT, EXT over and over.

Good Luck!

XP Service pack 3 will not boot with NVidia Geoforce 6600 drivers

There's a chance that your screen resolution is set higher than your monitor can handle. Try booting into safe mode and see if you can resolve the problem. You may also have to configure the BIOS to use the expansion slot that your using for the primary video, and turn the integrated (on-board) one off. (If you haven't already done so)

Windows XP not starting after power outage

I have just in fact a few days ago came across a similar issue. As to whether or not your hdd needs to be replaced is uncertain. What I can tell you is it seems as though the MBR or master boot record has become corrupt or one of the reader arms inside the hdd has failed.
Refering to the corrupted theory, may be simply fixed by booting off of a win xp cd and reformatting your drive and reinstalling windows after the format.

HOWEVER

In my case even booting off of a xp cd did not resolve the issue, every time anything would attempt to read from the hdd the computer would reboot. I suspected hdd failure at first, but this was not the case. It turns out it was a virus that infected the ntfs.sys and the MBR and put a binary code into those 2 files to reboot the machine.

Luckily at work (IT industry) I have a norton ghost server and was successfull at reimageing the hdd, doing so erases the MBR and everything else for that matter and rewrites it. However in doing so I lost all data that was on the hdd to begin with.

If you are not very tech savvy I would probably recommend hdd replacement however since you do have a HP which was prebuilt with xp, you don't have a xp install cd and thus unable to reload windows. I recommend finding a friend that has the xp install cd or you will have to go to the store and buy XP.
