SOURCE: My Computer does not show: Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 500 GB external USB hard drive

Well i got a simple 320 gb external hard drive, and since the first month i had problems, i solve the recovery issue by opening the hard drive, and find it out, the inside was broken, and it got unplugged. so plugged it back and got my info. if your data its more important than 200dlls or less break the thing open, because if you claim the warranty they are not responsible for your information.

SOURCE: Notebook does not recognize My Book / Western Digital hard drive

I have solved a similar problem to this. My laptop would not allow me to get to my WD Passport. The driver was fine and no errors were reported - it recognised the drive when I ran the hardware removal utility - I just couldn't see it from any of my windows applications and therefore couldn't get to any data.

The problem was that the passport was being designated as E:\ but my laptop already has a network drive mapped to E:\. When I am in the office the computer connects the network drive to E:/ and so my passport automatically picks the next available letter - F:\. Away from the office, the network drive is still buit shows as "disconnected network drive" and somehow the laptop gets confused into designating both the the passport and the disconnected network drive to the same letter. so the passport is not visible in My Computer.

To fix it I went to My Computer, right clicked on the disconnected network drive and select Disconnect from the options there. And hey presto the passport appeared!

You can see which letter your USB HDD is assigned in the device manager in XP. Right click on the device and go to the Volumes tab - click on Populate and the drive letter should be shown there. If that doesn't match what you see under that letter in My Computer it looks like you have a similar problem & so disconnecting whatever is there in My computer might help.

There is no power when plugged in...is there a re-set button somewhere on it?

There should be a very small circular port on the back of the digital drive, use a paperclip to press the button inside this port. If that doesn't work try looking at the cord there might be some kind of short in the wire. Also try a different power outlet. If both of those two things don't work, your drive may have died. I would suggest that you take it to a data recovery specialist.

My book essential has worked for several months now til now.... the white light is just blinking and my computer doesntg seem to recognize it anymore what should i do?

From the user manual (click here) on page 4, the slow blinking means that the drive is in standby mode.
The user manual does not explain how to get the drive out of standby mode, but you may want to try the procedure for powering off the drive that is on page 34 that say to press the power button on the back of the unit and wait for the LEDs to turn off.
If the unit does not power-off on its own within a few minutes of pressing the power button, the next thing to do is the following:
Shut down your computer with the drive still connected and powered-up. Once the computer is completely powered-down (no lights on or noise coming from the computer, unplug the power cord of the external USB hard drive and wait a minute. After you've waited a minute with the external USB hard drive unplugged from power, plug the power cord back in to the external USB hard drive Make sure the USB cable from the drive to the computer is properly connected. Power-up your computer using the power button on the computer and let the computer boot as usual. Once the computer has booted, check whether the external USB hard drive is now available.
Happy New Year and Thanks for using FixYa

Disconnect the MyBook.
Connect it *ONLY* when you are prompted to connect it.

> just bought

Take it back to where you bought it -- it could be "defective" -- and get a replacement, under warranty.

WD My Book Essential Edition 500 GB Ext Hard Drive is making my computer run very slowly.

First, download AVG antivirus2_bing.gif at file:///C:/Users/Owner/Desktop/AVG%20Free%20-%20Antivirus%20Download%20Best%20Virus%20Protection.URL
then reboot yor machine while holding the F8 key as it boots back up. A menu will apear. Choose -->"start windows in safe mode with networking".
The os will start in safe mode. run an AVG2_bing.gif virus scan, then run Defrag by exploring your computer, right click on the drive letter, click PROPERTIES, then the TOOLS tab, click the "check now" button, and only checkmark the top box 'fix file system errors', then click ok, the computer will then tell you it will scan upon next reboot., Now click the DEFRAG NOW button. the choose defrag. After Defrag runs for about an hour and it is finished, restart the system. If it still won't run normally, go back into Safemode buy pressing F8 on reboot2_bing.gif, then run a registry fixing program such as uniblue registrybooster, then reboot again.
Good luck.

Computer doesn't recognize hard drive

Basic Troubleshooting:

-Check all connections (Ethernet, Power, USB, etc)
-Install the appropriate driver for the device, usually included on a CD
-Double Check compatibility with your system (system requirements usually on packaging of product)
-If you haven't rebooted since you set it up, then reboot, this fixes a lot of things
-Try the product on another computer
-Try different cables/ports on the comptuer.

If nothing works, then send it in if it's under warranty or contact a professional service.

I opened the external case hoping the hdd was still ok only to find out that the hdd cables had been moved slightly out of position..propably from a fall or a knock I didn't even noticed..
I just pressed them back in..click..and everything was back to normal..
