Question about Compaq Presario S5100NX (E120866) PC Desktop

3 Answers

Is there a way to reinstall windows without the windows installer cd's. We actually bought our computer with windows already installed from "Office Depot". We are trying to give our computer away, but before we do that we want to make sure nothing is left on that we don't want them to have. Naturally I thought a reformat of hard drive would work. Maybe there is something else we can do to get rid of everything on the computer but still keep windows. Thanks for your reply, David Ball.

A smart way is to create a new user in the user accounts at the control panel, and then uninstall all programs.

After that just delete your old account and it will delete all files and settings (backup them first if you wish).

That will make windows look like it was just installed from the beggining.

If you really want to format, it's legit do download windows from any site since you use the key correspondent to the computer in question.

Good luck

Format the drive in which you keep your data using windows and keep in mind changing its format... e.g if fat32 then switch to NTFS... this will remove the data completely ... and yes if there is any data regarding the Windows drive then transfere it on the Data drive of yours..

My computer keeps showing blue screens, and my software is corrupted. How can I restore my files without the WINDOWS XP CD?

The Windows XP installation CD includes an option to repair an existing Windows XP installation. Using this option allows you to reinstall Windows without losing the files, personal data and programs you already have on the system. To take advantage of it, just place the CD into your CD or DVD drive on your PC and reboot the computer. During the installation you will be prompted if you wish to use the recovery console to repair a Windows installation. The recovery console is rather limited in its use, so just press the Enter key to proceed with the installation as you would normally.

blank.gif Press F8 to continue past the Licensing Agreement.

blank.gif The next screen should display a prompt asking you if you wish to repair an existing installation. Select your Windows installation (most likely it is the only one) and press R.

blank.gif This will begin the repair and reinstallation of Windows. The installation will copy files to the hard drive, reboot the system, and then proceed just like a normal installation. Follow the prompts just as you normally would any normal Windows installation.
When the installation completes, you should still be able to access all of your documents and installed programs.

How can i find the product key of my MS word Outlook 2007?

Magical Jellybean Keyfinder will show you the keys for installed Microsoft products as well as many other applications. The free version is fine. It is NOT a key generator. If you are trying to install or reinstall Office and you don't have the key, the program won't help. Your key is on the case the installation CD or DVD came in. Or, if you bought a computer with Office installed as an extra-cost option, the key will be included with the paperwork packed with the computer.

You need to tell the sales rep that you need the product installation code for MS Office 2007 and it was part of the package you purchased.
Ask for the installation MS Office CD the documentation and the product installation code, as well as the Windows installation CD and product installation code.
You will need these if you have to install these onto a new hard disk.

How do I upgrade or reprogram my dell latitude d630 without a recovery disk? please help

You don't need a manufacturer's recovery set except to put back the exact same stuff as was originally installed, much of which you don't need anyway. Your computer will have a valid Windows product key sticker on it, and you can reinstall Windows using a regular installation CD.

You'll need a CD for the same version of Windows that was preinstalled. You will also need the drivers for your computer's hardware (video, audio, network interface, etc.), which you can download from Dell's website.

Insert the Windows CD and boot the computer from it. (Most computers are set to boot from the CD drive if there's a disc in, but you may have to change the boot order if your computer always tries the hard drive first.) At one point you'll need to enter the Windows product key; use the one on the sticker on your computer. Later, after the installation is all finished, you'll need to go through activating your Windows copy. These steps aren't needed with the factory restore disc, but it's only a minor inconvenience.

After Windows is installed, install the hardware drivers you downloaded. Most drivers are packed as executable programs. Run them and they automatically install whatever Windows needs. When you're done, your computer will be ready to go.

Your computer won't have any of the applications that were preinstalled, but it's normally stuff you can live without anyway. You can find free or low-cost applications for just about anything you want to do. For antivirus programs there's Avast!, AVG, and Avira for starters. Some CD/DVD burning software applications are CDBurnerXP or InfraRecorder. OpenOffice is a great alternative to Microsoft's Office suite. In short, you're able to put on just what you need, and to pick from the many options available.

Don't let the process scare you. It's actually quite simple and the result is worth it. Good luck with your restore, and thanks for using Fixya!

I recently bought and installed microsoft office home and student. My P.C.crashed and I installed new windows xp. I can't find out how to reinstall the product.

Installing is very straight-forward. Simply put the CD into your drive and it will be recognized by the computer and give you the option to install. If it doesn't, choose setup.exe and that will start the install process.

Remember you're going to need to find the CD jacket that has the product key so you can enter it during the install process.
