Question about Dell Inspiron 531s Desktop Computer

2 Answers

Can't factory restore dell inspiron 531 (windows xp).

When I turn on my computer a screen pops up. On this screen it gives me the option to "strike f1 to retry boot, f2 for setup utility." After I strike f1 the computer starts up normally. While it is starting up I strike f8 to repair my computer, BUT WAIT I do not have the repair my computer option. The options are in order as follows.
Safe Mode Safe Mode With Networking Safe Mode With Command Prompt
Enable Boot Logging Enable VGA Mode Last Known Good Configuration Directory Services Restore Mode Debugging Mode Disable Automatic Restart On System Failure
Start Windows Normally Reboot Return to OS Choices Menu

Please help me, I have tried everything, but nothing seems to work.

I don't have the option to repair my computer on the advanced options menu.

Pressing f1 starts my computer up. My computer is full of viruses, though, and I am trying to do a factory restore on it. I don't have the "repair my computer option" on the advanced menu.

Hi, I am unsure if you actually tried a factory restore, or if this is a new problem that just "popped" up. Please let me know what happens when you press f1 to try to reboot WITHOUT pressing F8 for safe mode. Hank

Do you have the restore DVD or CD that came with your machine ? usually just rebooting, telling it to boot from CD (if it doesnt already) and it should walk you thru it.

You might want to try going into setup and setting your boot drive options to DVD drive as your 1st, HD as 2nd and Floppy as 3rd. Put your windows disk in the DVD before boot and run the program from DVD.

You've been sending out multiple notices of the same debug, so you must be in quite a quandry. As Hank94170 was asking, do you have the backup disks that come with a Dell system. I know they come with HP and Compaq wasn't sure of Dell. If it's like the others, you can only use it in the machine it came in. Oh, the good old days. Try my original answer if possible. When you get to the screen says hit = to go to setup, do it. In setup screen go to boot menu. Look to change the sequence of boot devices from Hard Disk 1st to DVD/CD 1st maybe Floppy 2nd and Hard drive 3rd. Your system should come up and ask if you want to boot drom DVD/cd hit a key. You are now at the part of windows where you can repair or wipe out your existing copy. If you wipe out your copy, you'll have to re-install all your programs ( unless you've backed up :)

No bootable device detected

If you strike F1, the system retries as said in the comment. That does'nt solve anything. Rather strike F2 which allows to enter the setup menus of your computer.
In this area you should understand what you are doing. Any update of setupdata may prevent further restart. At least take note of values and changes. You exit setup via a question "update Y/N". Then the computer restarts.
Anyway, in the setup menu you may inspect the devices and see if you the system identifies the disk. If not it may come from a bad connection of hard disk (sata pins, ...) or from low level disk information (format information).
With setup menu you may get in the boot order menu, that allows for the selection of an alternate boot media. You may boot on an installation media, ( install DVD generally, like originall windows install DVD) in order to understand and repair the situation, or from a rescue system like UBCD. You may also try Ubuntu from the CD without installing, just to verify if you may see the disk in the configuration.

When i start up my computer it says no bootable devices--strike f1 to retry boot, f2 for setup utility press f5 to run onboard diagnostics

Well I think the problem is that it can't find the hdd or it is not booting from it, to fix boot up your laptop as soon as you boot up the laptop start pressing f8 until a screen appears when the sceen appears select the hdd option (a few other options should pop up as well) and after you have done that sit back and wait. If that does not work you might have to take out the hard drive and then put it back in.

I understand your frustration. Do you have a "recovery cd "(Operating system disc) ,which came along with your computer . if you have the same please, put the disc in the CD drive and restart the computer. you need to select boot from cd option and then follow the on screen instruction.

*you can get the "recovery cd"from your computer manufacturer.( call Dell customer care)

I am trying to restore my inspiron b 130 in factory settings however the instructions i have are turn on computer start pushing f8 to advanced boot options then repair your computer to dell factory...

When its a computer that is using the windows XP you wont have that option .. Its a different option to restore to the factory settings

Use the following things
Dell has a default partition on the computer and you can install with the same..
If you have windows vista on the computer then tap F8 when the computer turns on and then you will be able to see the advanced boot options.. Select repair my computer.. In the repair my computer screen select the dell factory image restore...
Your computer will go through the installation and it will be up and running...
If you have windows Xp then you have to turn on the computer and when the dell logo appears you have to simultaneously press control and the F11key.. You will be able to reinstall the OS in this way..

If you are not able to get into this option then there might be no restore partition availlable
In that case you have to reinstall using the disc

Check your BIOS, by pressing F2 and see if the hard drive is recognized. It should indicate the MFR next to the hard drive listing. If it's not there, then you might have a bad hard drive. If it is there, try re-installing the operating system with the set-up disk. You can also go to the Dell website, enter you service tag number, and get technical support for your particular laptop. It might have a recovery partition in the hard drive to recover to factory settings.
