Question about Grilling

New Char Broil gas grill heating issue

I have a brand new Char Broil Infrared 4 burner gas grill. I used the char broil conversion kit to use natural gas. However, whenever I use this grill it takes really long to heat up (about 20 minutes) and it tops out around 475-500 degrees. Do grills burn cooler using natural gas opposed to LP?

Is there something I can do to correct this issue? I never had this issue on my old barbecue.

I bought a new Charbroil Red yesterday and did change out the orifices, etc to use with natural gas. I can not get the hood thrmometer to read over 350-400F....Yes, I undersxtand that the hood is at a lower temp than the grates by perhaps 100F... still, not nearly as hot as claimed. I don't see any answer to the similar post here...SHould it be indicating cooler than with LP? Does it affect the performance? Do I merely have a non-infared for all that $ and work? ....also, the ignitors don't work either...and yes, I tried a new baterry and it is installed + side outward!

The customer support center didn't have a clue....would you think they would at least know what a typical hood temp should be with this unit on NAt GAs?

Yes, this is not a soln, but hoping it might get someones notice!

The burners will not light. It appears that they are no getting any propane from the tank. Unfortunately, I have missed the manuel and this is a brand new grill. First time trying to use it and have...

The problem is more than likely the OPD Valve in the gas tank. To solve this problem, turn the Tank Valve OFF and disconnect the hose from the tank. Wait 5 minutes and reconnect the hose to the tank. Turn the tank valve ON VERY,VERY SLOWLY (Slow motion, slow). Once it's fully open, light the burner farthest from the tank first and turn it to it's highest setting. Does the flame height look correct? If so, light the remaining burners following the same procedure. Now, to all the flame heights look correct? If so, you solved the problem. Just remember to always turn the tank valve ON very, very slowly. If it didn't solve the problem, make sure you have adequate gas in "old propane tank from the other grill."

To further help you, I have included a link to your Owner's Manual that you can download and print for future reference. http://www.charbroil.com/bps/char-broil/char-broil/knowledge/463247310%20english.pdf

Use of Charcoal or Lava Rocks in the Char Broil Patio Caddie?

LP grills are designed to use lava rock ONLY. Charcoal will clog the burners.

Regulator Repeatedly Reduces The Gas Flow

The new regulators will automatically shut down or reduce flow if the it senses that the flow is too high (as in a line leak or break). It can also be folled if you open the valve too quickly. There is a special plastic plug that can reset a tripped valve in the new tanks. (Mosquito Magnet supplies one with their product).

The other thing is that there is a recall going on at Char Broil of defective thermometers that are reading too low.

try opening the tank really slowly. if you open it too quickly the overfill protection devise in the tank will restrict the gas flow to the burners. hope this helps.

I dunno, I have not done the conversion for this particular barbecue, but the kit is listed in the parts list for that barbecue,

It would be appropriate at this time to print the conversion instruction manual and take it to a local 'guy' a gas fitter.
The instruction .pdf shows them converting 3, 5, 7 burner units with the same kit, and states
  • Insert orifice removal tool provided with kit onto firebox burner openings and unscrew orifices from valves.
Save removed orifices for later if converting back to LP Tank Gas.
The valves are designed to work with natural gas once orifices are removed.
Do not replace any Orifices when using natural gas.
NOTE: your gas conversion kit comes with replacement orifices for the Rotisserie Burner ONLY, do not use on Tube burner valves.

seems the same 2-burner kit is for all barbecues
I think the person on the phone messed up, but a gas-guy would know for sure

All lpg(propane) fueled barbecues can be converted to natural gas some easier than others.
The process requires changing the tiny lpg nozzle with a larger low pressure ng nozzle,
Charbroil web site lists the kit -available parts for the grill http://www.charbroil.com/consumer/product_detail_e.aspx?ProductID=438
the gas conversion kit from half way down the page
http://www.charbroil.com/consumer/product_detail_e.aspx?ProductID=1722
for $69.99

  • SHOULD be done by a licensed person for safety & insurance reasons,
