How to change rear axle seal in a Kubota B7800?

I need to know how to take the rear axle apart and change the rear seal it is leaking oil. I need to know how to disassemble and reassemble it.

You don't have to remove the whole diff to change the seals, but you will have to seperate it where the shaft meets the carrier housing. There is a clip holding the passenger axle shaft in place that you have to remove to change the seal. The drivers side axle stub can be removed with a little force as there is a spring clip holding that side in.

SOURCE: Left rear axle seal is leaking differental oil.

ok then here is the procedure  1 take off the axle nut
2 on the lower control arm you will find a large nut and bolt i belive the nut is a 21mm and the bolt side is an 18mm. this bolt is the one at the knuckle near the brakes. remove it
3 you will need to pull the knuckle out of the way or a helper to pull the knuckle out of the way so you can slip the axle out of the knuckle.( its a tight fit but there is room to slip it out.)
4 use a pry bar to pop the axle free of the diff. hosing its held in by a spring clip make sure the clip comes out with the axle if it gets stuck inside you will have to fish it out.
5 use a pry bar or screwdriver to pry seal out of housing then use a flat object that contacts the entire rim of the new seal so it can evenly be installed with out getting smashed and tap it in with a hammer. ( a good trick here is to use some grease and pack it into the new seal where the spring is this will prevent the spring from being shocked out of the seal during instalation . the spring keeps tension on the rubber in the seal so it stays tight to the shaft it is sealing.)
6 then revers the above steps. also make sure you are using the right gear lube it will most likely be 75w-140 but make sure you check your owners manual will tell you if it doesnt say on the diff cover. you can cause a lot of damage if you put in the wrong thing. and make sure  you feel the axle spring clip snap into place.
as a note there are two types of axle seals that are used on these so if the new seal looks different than the old seal then the folliowing will be important to you.the seals on these have been redesigned so if you axle has what looks like a cup or dust cover pressed onto the shaft where it goes into the diff the new style does not use this and it will prevent the axle form going in all the way so the spring clip will not lock in and you will have a leak. so you will have to remove it and install the axle without it.

Jack up vehicle and support on stands. Remove wheels. Remove differential cover . Locate and remove lock pin that holds cross shaft in. Slide cross shaft out. Push axle inward to release axle c clip. Remove axle and pry out old seal. Install new seal with proper tool.Add some lube to the seal lip to aid axle intallation. Revese removal procedure. This is for a "c" type axle.
Another type has 4 nuts attaching a retainer plate to the backing plate behind the axle flange. In this case the 4 nuts are removed and the axle will come out. This may require a little effort. I think that you have a "c" type axle in your vehicle. Hope this helps. Moe

Block the front tires. Break the rear lugs loose. Jack up the rear of the truck at the center if possible. remove the wheels & brake drums. Remove the brake shoes,return springs & all the other hardware. Remove the differential cover & drain oil. If you have a posi the next step sucks. You need to remove the threaded pin from the housing & remove the axle retaining clips. All the while,being carefull of the spring in the posi unit. If no posi,then same procedure,minus the "pucker factor". After the axle is out,take a large flat blade screw driver or pry bar & pop the seal out. Keep in mind the axle bearing is probably gone too , so that's another procedure. Keep it apart,you'll be glad you did.

Leaking oil and smoking from rear axle.


it seems that your axle shafts and such were just changed and the surfaces were never looked at that ate up those seals in the first place.. the brakes are adjusted too tight and this is also causing heat to buld up in the wheels..this can also burn out the seals and cause failure..gotta take it all apart again and check the bearing seal surfaces for any burrs or reasons for these seals to get cut up.. also when reinstalling these put some gear oil on the seal surfaces so they arent dry-ran on the shafts..this will destroy them also.. clean off the oil on the brake surfaces wit carb cleaner so it will evaporate quickly then reassemble..wheels shouild spin freely with little drag on them while turning by hand..

you need to remove the cover in the middle of the rear axle rotate the drive shaft until you see a bolt with a 5/16 head on it slide out the pin that the bolt held in remove the c clip that holds the axle in slide out the axle and replace the seal you should do both sides while its apart then put it back together and fill threw the plug on the front side that uses a 3/8 drive

Leaking oil at the rear wheels can be one of two things, Easy fix is brake fluid, this would be the rear brake wheel cylinder leaking. Check your brake fluid tank under the hood for low fluid. If that is ok. Your leak may be your rear axle shaft seal. You need to remove the tire/wheel ether way. Jack up the car to pull the wheel, take your lugs loose while the tire is still on the ground, it is easy to take them loose this way. Take the EM: brake off, and jack up this side of the car. Your car could have disk or drums as both are offered on the 2003 Town car. Once the tire is off you will see if you have disk or drums brakes. If drums you will need to pull the drum off at access the brake cylinder to see if that is leaking or not. If drums you have to back off the brake shoes by the adjusting wheel thru a small access window in the back plate. If you have disk brakes the caliper is right there and will be easy to see if it is leaking. If you have determined it is the rear axle seal leaking, this may be best done by a shop, due to needing a few special tools to remove the axle and then reinstall a seal. You will need a slide hammer. If drum brakes you will have to remove the brake backing plate, this means shoes and all hardware, please take pictures and get as good focus as you can to see how everything goes back together. Once down to the axle mounting, remove the 4 bolts and attach the slide hammer and pop out the axle, catch any fluid that will leak out. Hope this helps FixYa up.

Oil leaking from rear drivers side brake drum


If it's oil, your axle seal is leaking, and will need to be replaced. That will involve taking the rear diff apart. If it is brake fluid, you just have a leaky wheel cyllinder. Determine for sure which it is before you start spending money.

First thing is to make sure you chock the front tires so the truck will not roll. Raise the rear end and set it on jack stands. Put the transmission in Neutral and make sure the parking brake is off. Remove the rear tires and disassemble the brakes on the side with the leaking seal. Place a drain pan under the rear differential and remove the cover. Remove the differential shaft lock bolt. You will need to turn the drive shaft by hand to access the bolt. It will be on the right side off the spider gear housing. Only use a 5/16 or 8mm 6 point box end wrench to remove the bolt. After you remove the bolt reach on the top of the spider gear housing and push the differential lock shaft down to remove it. Make sure the spider gears do not rotate after you remove the shaft. If they do you will need to realign everything to reinstall the lock shaft. Push the axle shaft in enough to remove the "C" clip from the tip of it. The axle will now slide out of the rear end. You can use the tip of the axle shaft to remove the axle seal. If you're changing the bearing as well you will need a slide hammer with axle bearing adapters to remove it. You can use a socket and hammer to install the new bearing and seal. Be careful not to damage the bearing and seal. I recommend packing grease in the back side of the seal. This helps prevent the spring on the seal lip from coming off. Assembly is the reverse. Clean off all the gear oil from the differential cover and the axle. You can use RTV as a gasket if the OEM gasket is damaged. Fill the rear end with new gear oil of the proper type. Refer to your owner's manual.

I am replacing the seal on the rear penion i need touqe specs on the nut


PINION FLANGE & OIL SEAL

CAUTION: Following procedure must be used to retain proper pinion bearing preload. Failure to follow procedure may result in premature axle assembly or component failure. Ensure pinion bearing preload is checked before disassembly, as previous pinion bearing preload will be used during reassembly.

Removal

1. Raise and support vehicle. Scribe reference mark on drive shaft-to-pinion flange on differential for reassembly reference. Remove bolts and "U" joint straps at pinion flange on differential.
Disconnect drive shaft from differential.
2. Remove rear wheels and brake drums to prevent any drag that may affect pinion bearing preload reading. Using INCH-lb. torque wrench, measure amount of force required to rotate pinion. This is pinion bearing preload. Record pinion bearing preload for reassembly reference.
3. Using Holder (6719), hold pinion flange. Remove pinion nut and washer. Scribe reference mark on pinion flange-to-pinion for reassembly reference. Using appropriate puller, remove pinion flange from pinion. Remove oil seal from axle housing.

Installation

1. Ensure oil seal surface in axle housing is clean. Coat lip of oil seal with gear lube. Install oil seal using appropriate seal installer. Drive oil seal into axle housing until oil seal installer contacts axle housing.
2. Install pinion flange on pinion with reference mark aligned. Using appropriate pinion flange installer, install pinion flange on pinion.

CAUTION: Washer must be installed on pinion with convex side of washer facing outward (away from pinion).

3. Install washer on pinion with convex side of washer facing outward (away from pinion). Install NEW pinion nut. Tighten pinion nut to 210 ft. lbs. (285 N.m). Rotate pinion several times to seat pinion bearings.

CAUTION: DO NOT overtighten or loosen then retighten pinion nut when adjusting pinion bearing preload. If pinion nut is overtightened, collapsible spacer on pinion must be replaced.

4. Rotate pinion using INCH-lb. torque wrench. Rotating torque should be equal to reading recorded in removal step 2) , plus 5 INCH lbs. (.056 N.m). If rotating torque is low, tighten pinion nut in small increments until proper rotating torque is obtained.
5. To install remaining components, reverse removal procedure using NEW "U" joint straps and bolts. Ensure all reference marks are aligned. Tighten bolts to specification. Check lubricant level and add if necessary.

I have an oil leak between the drivers rear axel and the tire. What parts do I need to look into replacing?


You should be ok replacing the outer seal but check for bearing play or fautly outer wheel bearing before you disassemble. If to much lateral movement in axle shaft it will take out your new seal rather quickley.

2000 gmc both rear tire oil leakage.


You are correct, it's not brake fluid. Check the level in your rear axle, it sounds like you have bad seals in the axles allowing the rear differential gear oil to leak inside the brake drums.
This is a heavy weight oil, 80 or 90 weight. This leakage will ruin your brake pads, and if enough leaks out, your rear differential will blow. The seals aren't expensive, but it's a lot of labor to pull everything apart to get at the seals, plus new rear brakes. My Ford ( and I'm sure your GMC) require removal of the rear axles to change the seals. Good Luck! countrycurt0
