There's a possibility that the somewhere within the CD changer's mechanism there is something jamming the gears which allow it to open. I remember there was one time the CD changer wasn't opening and it turned out a cd was under in the CD changer's mechanism and I have no idea how it got there. In order to fix your problem you'd most likely have to open the unit and take the CD changer out but don't be afraid, opening and operating on this system is pretty much straight forward.
I have taken the lid off and the CD holder out. Now I'm not sure what to look for. The machine is on but none of the gears will turn now. When I started, the drawer was only going in and out 1/2 way
Oh, wow I was just checking my email and saw this come up. I do not have this stereo system anymore. My advice to you is you're better off buying a new stereo system preferably not an RCA. These systems are more trouble than it's worth. If the cd changer decides to fail you can rest assure that something else will after it's fixed e.g. laser mechanism.
