I think that you are right about the printhead running out of ink. Try running 1 or 2 test pages and see if the problem goes away

Turn off the device after removing the printhead
After removing the printhead, turn off the device, wait about 20 seconds, and turn it on again without the printhead installed. After it has restarted, reinsert the printhead.
it will go through this long routine of perhaps 20 min or so. after its compleate it should print great.

Black is used on all prints. Did you pull the tape on the new cartridge?

As with all of the solutions I've provided on this and the other HP88 printers, the problem is that the black printhead has become clogged due to the conditions the printer is kept in.
For some reason the pigment black ink in the HP88 printhead is particularly prone to clogging when used in hot, dry conditions where there is air conditioning or similar...
The only solution I have found to date is to replace the black ink with a dyebase alternative and use that with a new printhead. Finding this solution took me about 14 printheads and a lot of head scratching so it wasn't easy...
Finding a dyebase alternative may be difficult but whatever you do, make sure you purchase a remanufactured original HP OEM, not one of the all plastic designs with no black rubber bulb in the bottom of the printer. They fail and leak a LOT!.
Hope that helps..
