Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

Maytage la610 - Newton - old style counterweight transmission (mfgd.1981)

On starting agitation cycle after sitting idle for 24 hours, machine struggles to turn agitator and a low pitch growl can be heard near base of agitator. After manually helping turn agitator a few times, growling stops and agitator turns without hesitation. No further hesitation occurs unless machine is left idle for 24 hours or more, then same struggle to start agitation happens again. Drive belts and tension adjustment tested OK. Brake package and drive lug tested and working/adjusted correctly. Machine spin cycle functions properly and noiselessly suggesting that tub and radial bearings are OK. Is this likely a transmission starting to fail or could there be another cause? Thanks in advance for your help. Reply to: "krischler@q.com"

It is possible that the motor may be on it's way out. You might check to see if it has a start capacitor on it that may be getting weak and possibly by pushing the agitator takes the initial load off of the motor. Just a thought.

SOURCE: Agitator not working on Maytag PAV2300

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the transmission in your unit is bad,it has internal gears and the ones involved in the agitation are broke or bad, to replace the transmision is a lengthy process, your best bet is to just scrap it and get a new washer. I don't know if you know this but maytag company is no longer in business. They were purchased by Whirlpool back in November of 2006. One of the reasons is all the poor quality of their appliances. I am a technician that has been doing this for 15 years. The best unit I have seen to date is the Whirlpool Duet. I hardly ever have to work on them. Sorry for the bad news. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Maytag won't spin or agitate

I have had the same problem and found that the teeth on the under side of the agitator had been worn down to nothing... I assume this is from years of over loading (not from me) and so the agitator could not spin any more... i would tighten the bolt that holds th agitator on and it would come loose after a few loads. So my solution was to get a little bit longer bolt and newer plastic washer and tighten it as tight as i could and it seemed to work. Versus buying a new agitator base that would cost about $20-$30 and would have to wait for the part to be ordered. hope this helps

SOURCE: How to adjust new belt on maytag washing

sounds like you have a bad transmission. can you lift the top up so you can see what it is doing when it is trying to spin. does it adgetate and spin at the same time? If yes you have a bad transmission. also if you get 2 people one looking inside of the drum and the other turning the big pulley in one direction it should turn the whole drum in the other the agetator should go back and forth. Tell me what happens thanks.

Improperly installed thrust bearing kit. Too many washers cause the basket to spin during agitation.

Maytag Washing Machine Model SAV205DAWW not agitating

The transmission is broken on the inside due to Maytag using plastic gears. Designed to break with age and overloading abuse.
It's a pain to replace and expensive, too. Average repair cost $300. and 2 hours + labor

No agitation on extra rinse cycle on Maytag Washing Machine MAV8557AWW

The manufacturer may have found there was little or no advantage to having agitation in the second rinse cycle so omitted it.

Installed new belts, machine will not agitate

Transmission is bad. The transmission is not used during a spin but it is used during agitation. Check your warranty, the transmission maybe covered for 10 years for parts only and 5 years for parts and labor

Washer fills and agitates will start to pump and spin then stops let sit for a few minutes and it will try to spin again replaced both belts this is a maytag top loading about 8 yrs old

Either the program switch or the transmission has failed. The transmission is probably a lousy Whirlpool part and have had them fail in only a few years of light service. To eliminate the program switch, use a different cycle setting to see if it can complete any of those available. If not, then it's probably the transmission.

I own a Maytag Performa 4 Speed/24 cycle Washing machine. it is 4 years old. Problem: A very LOUD grinding sound when washer engages into wash, rinse, spin cycles. The Tub does agitate - but I don't...

sounds like you have a tub seal problem, which took out the bearings, I take it one buzy mom does lots of laundry! Maybe time for a new washer.
