I've had this problem. On the lower left side of the vacuum you need to make sure that is completely attached. Pull the part with the arrow button up and push the compartment down. This will allow suction to continue

SOURCE: handle won't fasten itself!
I'm no vaccum man but my grandmother ran into the similar issue and all that it was, was she was missing the little look pin that you would push to take it apart, hard to explain but where the handle attachs is there a hole in it about the size of your finger nail? if so then there should be on the handle a little spring loaded button kinda deal, this needs to go through the hole. But if there isn't then sorry for the long blerb

SOURCE: on button won't stay on
I had this same issue under the same circumstance. I followed the repair guide for replacing the switch (I didn't replace the switch, just disassembled the switching mechanism) posted here:
I found the switch to be stuck in between on and off. I just manually pushed the switch and it became unstuck and started working again.

Try this quick repair and see if this fixes your Dyson: This is a frequent problem that we see come in on Dysons. If this doesn't fix it, please feel free to just use the clarification request and let me know this didn't fix it. The suction problem is happening because when the machine is put in the upright position it diverts the suction from the floor to the hose automatically, and it's probably stuck in between the lower part and the hose part.
Turn power off and unplug the machine.
Tilt the machine backward to a 45° angle.
I hope that this was helpful to you. Please feel free to use the Clarification Request form here on Fixya if you have any questions.

Hi there, it sounds as though the wand handle is blocked. To test this, remove the wand handle from the hose and test the suction at the top of the hose. If its strong here, then you will need to remove the blockage from the wand handle. If the suction is still poor, you will need to remove the hose by pressing in the catch on the hose cuff near the base of the machine and removing any blockages.
I hope that this information is useful to you.
