Question about Yamaha 96 Kodiak 400 Generator Stator Flywheel Rotor
The starter Bendix gear must be stuck in the disengage position, and is not engaging the flywheel. Try hitting the starter with a rubber mallet or with a piece of wood and a hammer. You may be able to loosen the gear by spraying some WD40 or the like into the gear. You probably should take the starter off to clean /lube the gear. If all fails, you're looking at a new starter.

I have 2 Kodiak's with no starter problems thus far. My suggestion would be to visit your local Yamaha dealer to see if the starter drive is replaceable, if so replace it or have it replaced you may be too far from help the next time it decides not to function.
