The starter Bendix gear must be stuck in the disengage position, and is not engaging the flywheel. Try hitting the starter with a rubber mallet or with a piece of wood and a hammer. You may be able to loosen the gear by spraying some WD40 or the like into the gear. You probably should take the starter off to clean /lube the gear. If all fails, you're looking at a new starter.

How and where can I access this gear?

  • Joel Friedenberg May 14, 2014

You can access the gear by removing the starter. The ger is at the end of the starter motor. Try to lubricate it to see if it frees it up. It has an in-and -out motion. You can hook the starter up to a battery once it is out and check to see if the gear moves in and out. The starter has a lot of torque, so hold down. Place Pos cable on large screw and Neg cable on the case. Be Careful not to hit the Pos cable on the frame. You can use a set of jumper cables.

I have 2 Kodiak's with no starter problems thus far. My suggestion would be to visit your local Yamaha dealer to see if the starter drive is replaceable, if so replace it or have it replaced you may be too far from help the next time it decides not to function.

Hi, David for this situation I would call my local dealer or reputable shop's service/parts department and inquire about any possible quick fix, answers, or parts inquiry. If necessary, transport your bike to the dealer or shop and have a professional technician take it for a test drive, if it is in running condition, and give you a written estimate of repairs and answer any specific questions you may have about your problem. How to install choke cable on 400 Kodiak atv ?

Your information is on the ATV Forum

Throttle cable: remove the 3 screws on the right side of the carb, take off the cover, there is small rubber gasket (red) Don't lose it. you'll see the cable attached inside. move the mechanism forward like you're opening the throttle to get enough slack to unhook the cable.

Choke: on the other side of the carb, the choke cable screws in with a plastic nut (10 mm i think) unscrew with your hand, if its tight use pliers or wrench..its easy to unscrew it.

How to fix the yamaha krypton starter not engaging the engine

Hi, Anonymous the starter drive/Bendix/clutch is a mechanical gear driven component that engages the clutch pack ring gear to turn over the engine. It has an internal mechanism that allows the gear to turn in one direction and once the engine starts allows the drive gear to free spin. If gear free spins in both directions then the drive gear has failed, it is not serviceable and needs to be replaced. Starter spins freely, will not engage

there is a coil that pushes starter out to engage it to flywheel and a motor part that turns it. check to se if the coil part is good or hooked up.
