Question about GE JES1456 Microwave Oven

Open Question

GE JES1456 - Did I accidentally disable fan / turntable? Cook timer still works.

JES1456DS1WW. Less than 2 years old. I have trouble seeing in the dark and tried to heat up a mug of coffee, punched what I thought were the right buttons (several), could not get it to start, so got my glasses, punched the correct buttons, and the display did indicate "Cook", and the timer started counting down but the turntable, fan, etc.. no longer works! Did I enter some Secret Sequence that disables the mechanical part of the Microwave? Was working fine, never a problem 'til this. Called GE service, they were not very helpful. I already unplugged, let sit for 2 minutes, repowered, same results. Any ideas? THANKS!

SOURCE: Microwave Buzzing, Still Heats, but Turntable And Fan Not Working

This is not safe. If the fan is not running, the magnetron will quickly overheat and be destroyed. We answered this in more depth in the other place you asked it.

SOURCE: JVM1190 wont cook

You have a blown actuator. This is the device that creates the microwaves that cook the food. The cost of one of these will be as much as a new unit.

SOURCE: Microwave won't heat, and turntable doesn't turn

All the parts you mention are very inexpensive, but yours does not have a triac.

It could be the cook relay, but it's more likely to be a switch.

Looking at the schematic, it's probably a bad primary interlock (upper door switch) or maybe its mount is bad.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside.

Door switch or mount trouble is usually caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

There are plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches and onto which the door latches lock when you close the door.

The screws on these mounts may be loose. If they get too loose, the switches will not be activated properly.

Sometimes it's a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate just out of position. This tab can be hard to see, since it is under the bottom edge of the switch.

If you have a broken mount, it's usually more economical and safer to just add a dab or two of hot glue to the mount to secure the switch. Let it cool for about 30 minutes before using.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There may also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or elsewhere, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

If you only need a switch, you can order a universal type here for $5 postpaid.

If the timer counts down and nothing else happens, the secondary interlock switch is bad. This switch completes the cook circuit and this is why it doesn't run. You need an ohm meter to diagnose and find the right switch. Switch failure is caused by opening the door when it is in cook mode. Push the stop button first before opening the door and this failure will cease to occur. BE CAREFUL !!

Microwave runs but does not heat or cook food

If a Goldstar, LG or Zenith MV1610 or MV1608 is running but not seeming to heat a load placed in center of turntable, its probably because the "stirrer" intended to spread microwaves generated by the magnetron around the cook chamber is stuck so that most all the heating is directed toward the back and top rather than the center of the cook chamber. This usually occurs after cooking for longer than a minute with no load in the cook chamber - as when a model w/o a timer (such as a MV1608) is intentionally operated in cook mode to serve as a kitchen timer, or when a model with a timer function (such a MV1610) is accidentally operated for longer than a minute w/o any load. Before assuming the magnetron (usually warranted for 5, 8 or even 10 years) or other high voltage component such as diode or capacitor needs to be replaced, try “cooking” a 16 oz pyrex cup of water at full power on the outer edge of the turntable for 2-3 minutes - which usually reactivates the "stirrer" and restores normal cooking function.

GE JE1860BH04 microwave--light works but nothing else

You`ll probably find that it`s the interlock switch on the door latch. When the door is closed, the hooks that protrude from the door enter the slots in the oven casing and press down on the latch switches. DO NOT over ride these switches, replace them or get an engineer in to check them. Ian

I have GE JES735-BJ02 that heats but makes weird sounds like a rumbling sound.

It could be a failing fan motor or magnetron.

While a microwave should never be left running unattended under any circumstances (as your owner's manual will tell you) it's even more important when one is exhibiting a failure or any odd behavior. So play it safe and stay with it while it's running!

And, as with anything that is not working right, it should be fixed as soon as possible or it can get worse.

If it's less than one year old, it would be fully covered under warranty. I'd suggest contacting the manufacturer to get it fixed free.

GE Customer Service is here.
