Hello. If the cable is loose, adjust it first. If the cable is tight, leave it alone. If the cable looks bad, then replace it. But, it could be the clutch it self getting to be bad. You also can try to adjust the clutch itself. If you are still having problems shifting into reverse, then you need to replace the clutch it self. Good Luck.

Is it possible to replace the output shaft bearings on a 2002 saturn sl2 5 speed without removing the trans?

No. Everything is done from the inside of the trans. If you need instructions for removal, let me know.

Gear Shift very stiff, doesnt want to go into 1st gear or reverse

Continued operation like this and $100 would have been the cheap fix. If this is a hydraulic clutch, check the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder. Most take Dot 3 brake fluid and it will say on the cap. It is located on the fire wall near brake master cylinder

1999 saturn sl2 5 speed transmission will not go into reverse 2nd gear sometimes will not engage is there a linkage adjustment.

There is no 'adjustment' but you can check your linkage for security making sure nothing is loose or worn. Also check your fluid levels. If reverse is completely out and your starting to lose second you will probably need to have the transmission rebuilt or replaced.

2002 Saturn SL1 - Losing reverse and second gear

The simple answer is that there are two loose nuts in the transmission.

The output shaft nuts are loose. The are behind a cover that you can see through the driver's side wheel well.

Check the cable clips at the trans. Sometimes these clips come out and won't shift. Horseshoe clips that hold the cable housing.

2004 Saturn Vue shifting problem

You should probably check the shifter cable. I had the same thing happen and then I couldn't shift into 2nd, 4th, and reverse gears. Then the cable snapped and I had to replace it. Be careful "man-handling" the shifter. If you break the shift linkage at the base of the shifter it's about $45 from the dealership. It's cheap plastic and doesn't take much to break. If you really want to know if it's the shift cable and not the gearbox crank the engine, have someone hold the clutch, disconnect the shift cables from the box, and manually shift the gears. If they move smooth, it's probably your cable which would mean there's a kink in it somewhere. You can't fix that. Depending on the VIN you're looking at anywhere from $189 (what mine cost with tax) to a little over $200 (from the dealership brand new). Talk to the parts desk at a Saturn dealership and they can tell you which one you need. Hope this helps
