Question about Ruud UAMB Air Conditioner

1 Answer

I had a new 2.5 ton condenser installed last year and the compressor burned out. I had it replaced. My unit stopped cooling well during the middle of the day and we added some gas to it. Then, the compressor burned out again. The run capacitor also melted at the same time. any idea what would cause this - 2 new compressors in 2 years?

Did not replace but the existing coil was sized correctly for the condenser - i.e. did not use a larger condenser w/ an undersized coil. A-coil is plugged?

Thanks Funny - that helps. You can't condense liquid - makes sense! A+ man.

When 13+ SEER condensers are replaced without installing a inside coil with an expansion valve the compressor in the new unit will slug and go bad. Slug means that liquid refrigerant returns to the compressor. Liquid can not be compressed so it causes the compressor to fail.

Brand New 2 weeks old 4 ton Trane compressor leaks a lot of water onto pad

If the unit is running in cold weather than there is ice building up on the coils located outside. This is normal in that the unit is running in heat pump mode heating inside and cooling outside, After the unit detects the ice build up it briefly reverses the cycle heating the outside coils melting(defrosting) the ice which you observe as water on the pad.

The video gives you an example of the defrost cycle!

Sounds like they did all that could be done. As long as they installed the right capacitor I will agree with this diagnosis to install a new unit. I don't know what you mean by "unit". 1900.00 seems a little low for a condenser and a little high for a compressor. But that is just me.

as most ac units are capillary tube control not tx valve having matched units is critical. as for cost the condensing unit is much more complex and expensive than the evaporator.

What is the HP rating if a 3 ton air conditioner?

Hi, this depends on the compressor that is installed in this unit. It may be a Copeland scroll, a Tecumseh, its hard to say. Most compressors are around 2 hp for a 3 ton unit. On the data plate it will tell you the h.p. of the blower and condenser fan motors such as 1/4 h.p., or 1/3. If you can get the name and model numbers from the top of your compressor, you can call a a/c, Refrigeration parts house, wholesale and they will have it in there manuals. The B.T.U. rating for your compressor is 36,000. There are 12,000 BTU's per ton of cooling, this is something that almost no one knows, but now you do. If it were a smaller unit such as a 2 and 1/2 ton, it would be 30,000 B.T.U.'s. You can look at the model number of a unit and you will see numbers like this, 024, 2-ton, 030, 21/2 ton, and 036 a 3 ton unit and so on. Your compressor alone will be in the range of a 2 horse unit, which ever the brand of compressor they installed in it. Please don't forget to rate me on this as I know you will be kind. I have a 3 ton split system using a Rudd 3 ton condensing unit model UAHE036JAS . The compressor is going bad and I would like to replace it with a new condensing unit operating on R-22 . I do nt want to...

Only if they are still available in your area. Goodman still has a few R-22 units left in Texas the last I heard and that is only if your local supply stores can order them. They are getting to be far and few between since they have stopped making the equipment. You might also get a second opinion, a lot of companies are just trying to benefit more by replacing everything, but you could still have a R-22/410A compatible indoor coil and copper line set, they just have to use a flush kit to get all the old refrigerant out of the system. 410A is easily contaminated and runs at a lot higher pressures, that is why they want you to replace everything, but there is still hope. It will save you a little money just having the system flushed and replaced with 410A condenser, but only if compatible. Hope this helps and good luck!

Our freezer and reridgerator temps are climbing and the front of the middle divider between the freezer and fridg is burning hot. What's the problem?

There is a condenser fan down at the compressor area that isn't running at enough rpms to properly cool compressor. You will need to clean the condenser coils and also install new condenser fan. The compressor is over heating and shutting down on internal overload. Replace this fan and you will be good to go. As an emergency aid you can pull unit from wall about 6 to 12 inches and place a fan in the front area out of your way letting it blow air thru the front over the compressor until you can get the fan. Hope this helps and good luck.

WEATHERKING 10AJA4801 BAD COMPRESSOR

You have 10 seer 4 ton unit. A compressor install in my company (4 ton) is about 1400 dollars. Remember when you change compressor you only get a 1 year warranty. A new unit can have as much as 10 year compressor warranty. Amana has a 10 year parts and labor with their unit. The new unit will be 13 seer and you may have to install a TXV inside. You might think about changing the whole system with the new 410A system. Either way a new condensing unit is needed. I have not had anyone just change a compressor in an older unit. Just not cost effective. Get several estimates before you make up your mind. Rus

Compressor kicks out and it's new

First of all, clean your outside coils so that you are assured of good cooling air. The compressors have an overtemp device that is usually internal to protect them against heat. If you have an air compressor use it to blow out the coils good. If the compressor will start, the capacitor is good so it sounds like a cooling problem with the compressor

Compressor freezes up at night and some during day.

You are being ripped off. The ambient (outdoor) temperature at night is low and therefore proper condensing does not take place causing the refrigerant to pool in the condenser and starving the evaporator. This causes a lower temperature in the evaporator resulting in "freeze up" which is often mistaken for a loss of refrigerant.
The proper thing to be done is to block off the condenser air causing the high side pressure to rise until the eqivillant of 110*F condensing temperature.
You can also install a low ambient kit which will cycle the compressor off when the temperatures fall

How was this unit originally equipped? TXV? Use only a TXV OF CORRECT size. In refrigeration if you have a 6000btu rating you do not use a 1/2 ton valve you use a 1/4 ton (3000btuh) at most and would need consulting with an engineer to arrive at the correct valve.

SO was the TXV the other fellow replaced an OEM valve? If not this may be the problem as most TXV's off the shelf are designed for walk-in refrigeration Not Reach ins. An OEM valve may be the trouble here.

Now not to stress the TXV but also the compressor (what was the original model?) Make sure it is designed for the particular heat range and size for this application. As you probably know 1 size compressor designs for AC will not be OK on Refrigeration at same BTU rating.

Call Del field and verify what they are using or recommending for this unit. model and Seal no required and the existing model and SN.

Also to my knowledge a receiver is not required and in fact will only add to your trouble. Receivers are for changes (wide differences) in condensing temperature and pressure. Never saw an application for one with a condenser designed from factory for indoor use with either type of expansion device.

If you need Del fileds number email me at farfield@hughes.net and in th subject line enter delfield?.
