Apple store will try and get you to buy a replacement iPod rather than repair it. Although you can get a replacement battery from a number of places for around £10, eBay is a good start. It's an awkward job to chane the battery but only takes around 30mins.
Once you replace the battery your iPod should function as normal.

Because if you charge the battery too often you might be getting something which is called a "fat battery" which if what happens as well if you charge a cell phone too often, it could also be that the cable that plugs into your computer to charge it could be dusty inside...
I think your ipod is dead. This happened to me to. I was listening to it when I arrived at my destination, and I thought I turned it off and I put it in my pocket. Later that day when I went to listen to it, it wouldn't turn on at all. Aparently, it had stayed on. Hold the pause button for five to ten seconds. The apple symbol will appear on your ipod. Immeadility put it in your docking station before it goes away. Your ipod will turn on, and itwill start charging.
