Question about Televison & Video

11 Answers

When you first turn on the TV the lamp mode flashes, the fans kick on,and the lamp comes on but no picture or sound and at this point the TV will not allow you to turn it off with the remote or manually but at this point if you unplug it for 5 to 10 seconds then plug the power cord back in the TV will come on with picture and sound and at times when you let the TV rest then turn it back on you get this plaid looking screen then if you unplug it then plug it right back into the AC outlet the picture comes back fine and will stay like that until the next day.

and no there is no broken solder connections, please read the entire post.

  • trilogyelect Jun 24, 2009

Sorry its not a color wheel either because when the TV completely boots up the picture is perfect.please read all of the above, thanks.

  • trilogyelect Jun 24, 2009

why if i unplug the power cord then plug it right back in the TV boots up completely and will stay on for as long as you keep it on without any issues, i left the TV for over 24 hours and it was still good.

Hello, thanks for the info, Im leaning to your suggestion, its the most logical, but i would like to say thank you to all the others who had tried to make sense of this confusing situation, As the other tech had suggested that i may also have a ballast problem due to the lamp flashing like a strobe light at start up makes me believe that i have more than one problem, and other techs also said something of the sort that it may be a power supply issue. Now not knowing what the voltage should be at certain parts of the power supply i will need to get schematics for this TV,correct? and do you have any suggestions as of a reliable parts supplier, i have a few but it seems as if they never have the parts available unless you are willing to wait for 2 months or more.

Due to what you've already posted, I'm about sure that the problem is in the power suply unit in your Projection unit. If you can not control it after turning on, means that some voltage to logic IC with Power function channel is missing. so after you turning off an back on, a bit higher than normal operating currents flows thoughout power suply capacitors which causes the voltage to appear at every critical point. So I'd suggest you in first instance check every single electrolythic capacitor (at least visualy), using multimeter measure that all voltages that are pointed at the circuit board really exist, so you'll find the missing one. Then just to continue track it all the way backwards to the source to find the point where it dissapears. I bet it will be just electrolytic capacitor dried out. You will see it yourself.
Any questions just let me know.

Good luck

Hi

This issue is related with the microcontroller of your projector which is not able to combine all the voice and video signals however, when you turn the TV off and ON, it resets itself and thus you are able to view the TV fine after restart. This issue is related to the main control board of your Projector.

Temporarily you'll be able to view the TV after this kind of reset, but if it the issue persists then you'll need to get the controller/main board examined for faults.

Please do accept this solution and revert for further assistance.

Thanks
Rylee

Hello, I can understand your frustration. Your problem is not your lamp as some may suggest, but I think you knew that. The color wheel is your likely problem. If you hear any whining from the tv and are getting the strobe light effect, the color wheel is the likely culprit. I would start there, pull it out and spin it, if it seems hard to spin, or stops rather quickly then it is bad and needs replaced. If you do not believe it is the color wheel, then the next step is the image converter is going bad, but that is unlikely unless the tv is 8 years old or more.

I did read it all, and I have seen this problem before. When the bearings on the color wheel start to fade you have the problems you are describing. The tv will work perfect for awhile and then you have issues, they get more and more frequent as the problem progresses. The only other thing it can be is the ballast that provides power to the lamp is bad or going bad. Either color wheel or ballast. They both cost about the same so it does not matter which one you start with.

If its a CRT tv its probably got something to do with the picture tube

try this

Now, that being said, at least try a couple of free attempts:

ONE: Hard reset. Merely unplug the power cord and leave it unplugged for 4 hours or more; then try again.

TWO: Vibration test. Whack it hard with your hand or fist all around the cabinet in order to vibrate any loose connection or cold solder joint internally. Older sets often have corroded pins in connectors or cold solder joints that start acting up and the vibration will activate them - for a while anyway. WOrth a try.

THREE: If the above do not provide any benefit then the only solution is a repair at the local shop. Maybe looking up the blinking code you can get some idea of what the problem is, but in any event when a tv shuts itself off it means the protection circuit has been activated. This activation is from a short circuit in one of the 8 or 10 sections of the tv. You can find the blinking code on the internet

You need to syncronize the new color wheel to the original digital board.
1. With the set off, press “mute,1,8,2, power”
2. Select “DDP1011?
3. Select “INDEX DELAY”
4. While changing the index delay value, look at the horizontal red bar at the bottom and make it look as close to true red as you can.
5. Select “OPTION”
6. Select “USER RESET” to save,tv will turn off automatically.
7. Turn tv back on and check color quality.

Sounds like a power supply issue, probably a capacitor in the startup circuit or a resistor which feeds a reduced voltage to an "always on" sensor relay for the standby/remote circuit. You can try the following:

Unplug the TV for a few hours to let the capacitors completely discharge. You can expedite this by unplugging the power cord, bridging the 2 prongs on the power recpticle on the TV, and hitting the power button a few times.

Plug the TV back in and see if it works. If you still experience the issue, you will have to replace the PSU. Not much you can do to fix the internals of a switch mode power supply.

Hope this helps!

I would have the ballast and the DM board checked. They are common faults in rear-projection tv's. A resistor may be failing and causing an overheated board or just a resistor is wearing out.

HL-S5687W looses picture and sound after heating up. When I change the channel, the picture returns. The fan is not coming on.

This does not but does in one way make some sense(I had to read your question a few times).

The key here is the fan does not turn on-----If any of the fans (lamp or others to a lesser degree do not come on: The lamp fan must come on or in a short amount of time--it should turn the set off and some have a lamp light and a temp light----

The set monitors the temperature of the lamp especially when set is turned off---it will not turn the lamp off until it cools to a specific temperature is reached----hence if set on for while and just unplugged which will kill the power to the lamp fan the lamp or even ballast that drives the lamp can be damaged.

Voltage to the fan can be measured and it must come on when set is powered up-----issue could be either fan is bad or no voltage is reaching it===most 2 wire fans will have the voltage marked on them--24vdc equals 24 volts Direct Current etc.

If a fan NEVER COMES ON (especially the large lamp fan) sooner or later something is going to get melted or fry.

Your description is a very good one but the issue is a bit rare (fan dead).

I would if there first check for voltage at the fan when set is turned on---if its there but fan not running the fan is bad.

Seen a few where dirt on the fan or even moving the fan blades made the fan kick on but by then you KNOW it is bad.

Let me know if you have questions or what you find.

Sony Vega KDF-E5OA10,picture will not come on, tv goes off.

There is a real good chance that the lamp fan is not turning. If you look with a flashlight in the vent on the left side looking at the rear of the set and have someone turn on the unit, see if it spins. if it doesnt, the protect circuit in the tv will not let the set turn on. Replacing the fan will cure the proplem if it is not turning.
Hope this helps,

This is the lamp going bad. For some reason, it doesn't spit out that lamp error, it just keeps refiring the lamp and it just cycles forever. When the lamp totally fails, you will get the lamp led lit. Replace the lamp to resolve.

Tv keeps turning off?

cutta, you will most often hear a click on boot then the fans start up and lamp will then fire. The picture will start to show up....at what point does it shut off? and do you hear a click when the tv is turning off? Is it the complete tv shutting down, fans and everything that turns off? Do you see any lights on the the front panel "POWER", "STATUS" or "LAMP", what are they doing? If you see a Power, Status or Lamp light after it shuts off the below are what they mean if there is an issue. POWER - STATUS - LAMP - CONDITION/ISSUE: Off - Yellow - Off - Temp. high/dirty filter/excess room temp Off - Off - Yellow - 4000 hrs. Lamp usage warning Off - Off - Blink Yellow - Lamp Cover open Off - Blink Yellow - Off - Air Filter Cover open Off - Off - Red - Lamp failure (failed to turn On or broken) Off - Blink Red - Off - Fan Has Stopped Off - Red - Off - Circuit failure (short) or DVI cable disconnected If you want to check for the last "Error Code", after you first turn the TV on, by pressing the front panel ?DEVICE? and ?MENU? buttons at the same time and holding them for 5 seconds, it activates the Error Code Mode. The ?Power LED Light? blinks/flashes (1/2 sec delay) and then flashes again denoting a two digit Error Code indicating no problem or an error has occured since the last Initalization. i.e. "Power light" blinks 3 times (1/2 second delay) and then blinks 4 times then 1 sec delay and repeats a few times. This would mean "Error 34 - Lamp abnormality". See below for error codes..... Error Code - Description or issue 12 - No Error detected, check Power Supply 32 - Lamp Cover is open 33 - Air Filter Cover is open 34 - Lamp abnormality 36 - Light Engine (DMD or LAMP Fan stopped) 37 - Exhaust or Lamp Ballast Fan stopped 38 - Lamp temperature high 39 - DMD temperature high 41 - Short is detected 44 - DVI cable between FMT & Engine disconnected. Sorry for the long answer but it was an open ended question.
