Ctrl+Click on the icon in the dock and select force quit. Make sure you don't have too many other processes running at the same time.

That's the "beachball". It shows that the system is occupied with some background processing and does not have enough capacity to process your latest input. It should eventually stop if you leave it alone. You could do a force quit but will lose any current data that has not been saved. You may have to have the hard disk checked and optimized. Use Disk First Aid or Disk Utility in Applications/Utilities folder to check the disk.

Start with the left shift held down, this does some system housework and gives "safe boot" see if that helps, then look in fixya tips for how to repair the hard drive and permissions.

Unfortunately, this sounds like a problem with your hard drive/ logic board. To Fix This You Will Need To Go To The Apple Store And They Will Most Likely Have To Replace Or Repair It. the Process Takes About 2 Days - 1 Week (Just To Set Expectations.) :(
