Yes..you must turn lamp ON to the setting you want (high, medium, low)... and timer will not change that setting, but timer will turn lamp on-off

We can't figure out how to set our timer. Where and what are the segmented pins. Nothing is labeled. There is no diagram with the timer. Thank-you. Joy and Fred.

Hi Joy and Fred.
You posted under Woods outdoor timer, but don't give specific brand or model

Segments are usually on outer edge of dial.
Some timers the segments lift up, some push down, some pull up and out, etc.
Use a fingernail or small tool and fiddle around with it.
Some timers have pins located on dial face that click inward or outward. Use small tool and move them in and out.
Some timers have trippers that you attach to outer edge of dial.
If you are confused, open links above for illustrations.

After moving some segments-pins. Plug lamp into timer.
Turn lamp on. Plug timer into outlet.
Manually rotate timer dial and watch how lamp turns on-off.
Move timer switch both directions and manually rotate dial to see lamp turn on-off.
These tests will show you how to set pin-segments-trippers and switch for your specific timer.

The timer dial rotates as time passes. The dial is a simple clock that rotates because of a clock motor.
The dial causes segments-pins move small lever that turns lamp on-off.
Just like any clock, the correct time has to be set. To do this: rotate dial until current time lines up with arrowhead located on inner dial.

The segments lift up as you discovered.
Lift up about 10 consecutive segments and then manually rotate timer dial and watch when lamp turns on-off.
I think the problem you describe results from lifting only one segment, instead of all segments between the on-off times.

The dial rotates as time passes, and pins-tabs push tiny switch one direction or other direction, and switch turns light on-off.

How do I operate the pins. I get the Current time and can set the on time but am confused about the off time because it seems like the off time ends up to be pm and I am turning it on in the am.

Open following link to see photos of pins and tabs:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Woods-timers-and-manuals.html#Pins-tabs

Here's a generic instructions for plug-in timers.

Locate pins on dial: move 10 pins in a row. This will be for testing purpose.
Plug timer into outlet located on kitchen counter-top so you can see what is happening.
Turn lamp on. Plug lamp into timer.

Manually rotate dial clockwise and watch when lamp turns on-off.
This will tell you how to position the pins.

Most of these timers have a slide-switch.
Move the slide-switch one direction and then the other.
Manually rotate dial each time and see which way slide-switch should be positioned.

Set pins for on and off times.
Dark background is pm. Light background is am hours.

Final step is to set current time. Manually rotate dial until current time lines up with arrowhead located on inner dial.

As time passes, the dial rotates, and the pins click a lever that turns lamp on-and-off

Which way do the pins need to be positioned on a manual timer for it to be on, ie is it up or down for `on`

You posted under GE 15004 timer.
Push trippers down and then rotate tripper around dial to desired on or off time.
Release tripper and it tripper locks upward in place.

Other timers have segments and pins that are located around timer dial
The position for ON-OFF varies by brand and model number.

I suggest you turn lamp ON and make sure bulb is good, plug lamp into timer, set a few pins one direction or other, plug timer into wall. Manually rotate timer dial clockwise, and watch lamp turn ON-OFF to know how to set pins.

Also move the slide switch one direction and then other direction to see how override switch operates.
After checking operation, set pins exactly how you want, and then rotate dial clockwise until current time lines up with pointer located on inner dial.
Dial rotates with passing time and pins push small lever that opens and closes circuit.

Model 59204EV Outdoor Mechanical timer - How do I set it - The pins do not move on my timer - where are the pins located?

Different Woods timers have same model number, depending on who packaged and sold product.
Manuals are sometimes generic. They say pins when they mean segments or tabs.
Segments are small plastic divisions located around outer edge of dial.
They divide 24-hour day into 15 minute or 30 minute periods.
Link below shows sample pins and tabs.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Woods-timers-and-manuals.html#Pins-tabs

With the 15204, I believe these segments pull out or push inward; but they could also pull upward or downward.
Move a couple segments, plug in the timer and lamp, and then manually rotate dial to watch how lamp turns on-off.
Lamp must be turned ON and bulb working.

Some 15204s have a switch on face of timer, or somewhere on timer. Some do not have a switch, and some have a dial. Move switch to TIMER, or to AUTO. Or rotate dial to ON.

Following link has a close-up photo of on-off pins on GE 15075 timer
http://waterheatertimer.org/GE-timers-and-manuals.html#15075

Pins are located around timer dial
The pins divide 24-hour day into 1/2 hour segments
Pins are out for ON
Pins are inward for OFF
Notice that numbered dial is divided into dark and light areas ... the dark areas are PM, light areas AM.

For example you are connecting chicken coop lamp to this timer.
Turn lamp on and make sure bulb is working.
Plug lamp into timer.
Set pins in and out as follows: all pins outward between 4:30 pm on light part of dial to 8:00 pm on dark part of dial. And then set all pins outward between 5:00am on dark part of dial to 7:00 am on light part of dial.
Plug timer into outlet
Move switch located on top to TIMER ON
Manually rotate timer dial clockwise to see lamp turn on and off.
Lastly, set current time: Manually rotate timer dial clockwise until current time lines up with arrowhead located on inner dial. So if current time is high noon, then rotate dial until 'sun' symbol located on light part of dial lines up with arrowhead.
As time passes, the timer dial rotates, and the pins click circuit on-off.
To override timer, move switch to outlet-on.

Wondering how to use a 24 hour compact pin timer to automaticlly turn on my lamps ?? bought 1 yesterday but no clue of how to work it !

Pins are usually up for on and down for off, so put them to on for the times you want the lamps on and vice versa, obviously you can check firstly to be sure which way is on and which way is off.

I have the intermatic TN 300 model lamp timer and I forget how to set the timer...??

This answer is a little misleading. ALL the pins between the time you want the lamp on to the time you want it off must be pushed down. In other words, the lamp will light only when the timer reaches a pin that has been pushed down. You could have the timer turn a lamp on and off and on and off and on and off, etcetera, if you had one pin down, the next up, the next down, etcetera. It's a good visual indication of what the lamp will do: pin(s) DOWN = lamp ON; pin(s) UP = lamp OFF.
