SOURCE: my computer wont startseagate

click start control panel administration tools computer management device manager look through all of your devices if you see a yellow question mark?or exclamation mark ! or red x
right click to reinstall drivers or

if you can see your usb but its not working
ports(com&lpt)right click update driver

sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable

just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems

if this fails to fix the problem
type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11 CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} And remove upper filter and lower filter.

Then restart computer then check.

Also locate the below key and make sure it's value is 3 not 4. HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\usbstor make sure start value is 3 not 4

if still no luck
you might have to install a usb 2 or 3 card they are cheap and easy to install you can buy these on Ebay very cheap
hope this helps

My son downloaded a movie to my seagate expansion portable drive 250 gb. I pluged it into my computer and open My computer and I can find seagate. I click to open and I can see the file for the movie,...

Most likely you don't have the codec required for movies. You can try a different player, or you can install a codec pack such as The k-lite codec pack . It's free. All you need to do is to leave all the settings as is when you install it, and it should work afterwards. If it still doesn't then it's because Windows Media Player can't open it for some reason.

Another player would probably work in that case. I recommend trying Media Player Classic.
Good luck!

WD pluged to a Seagate HD Media Player= no data??!!

whell th eproblem is, when u pluged it in to the seagate...... a variation of the first sector happend, or something like that, thats y you cannot access it frome vista, and propably frome xp 2, what u can do is , using special programes for fixing boot sectors **** they are for experienced users in that domain (ex of product, winpe mini cd....), or u can download any linux live cd, its totally free (google for it), i recomand puppy if you are not familior with linux, when u download the iso and burn it, plug your external drive and boot the cd, when loaded, mount the extrenal drive and the internal one (if u have one), you will see the data, copy them , and then reboot with windows and format the external drive...then recopy the files.

Data Recovery from Seagate Desktop Expansion 500GB External Hard

This is a solution I have used in the past and it has worked. It's a Seagate Recover utility for end users.
https://services.seagate.com/diysoftware.aspx

If the data is absolutley critical and very valuable, you can send it to Seagate and they are very good at recovery as well. It gets a little pricey at $800, but I too have had to use that as well for mission critical data I could not afford to lose.
