There's nothing you can do. With the switch to digital broadcasting, the sound isn't on the same frequencies it used to be so this radio can't pick it up. Right now, nobody's offering a digital receiver for the sound. All your radio is good for now is the regular radio and weather broadcasts.

A multi adapter is a great choice, it is inexpensive and works for basically anything. You have a choice between ac or dc.
The voltage increments go up in about 3 violt, mine goes to 16 volt. This should work perfectly for you.

From my experiences with this specific radio, the problem you're describing indicates the batteries are low and need to be replaced.
