Question about ASUS p4p8x-uay Motherboard

In desperation, please help - MAJOR USB port problems

I doubt it's this easy to get help, but I will just try anyway. I have an Asus Motherboard (P4P8X with an Intel 865P Chipset), and I am running Windows XP Home with every update imaginable installed. I have two problems:
1) Often when booting up it says there is some kind of error and to use Windows "r" repair to fix it. Rebooting generally bypasses the message and loads Windows.
2) REAL PROBLEM - I have an external drive, however it is really an internal IDE hard drive with an external case. It only hooks up via USB. The instructions say that if running Windows XP it will work when just plugged in since XP already has the USB 2.0 drivers. THE DRIVE HAS BEEN WORKING FOR YEARS, but I just noticed yesterday it isn't showing up in Windows anyway. I did some troubleshooting and it doesn't even show up in the BIOS ANYMORE!!! Occasionally when booting up it will say the drive is detected, but it still doesn't show up in the BIOS.

This drive contains ALL MY BACKUP FOR EVERYTHING!!!!

Question about possible solution: In my BIOS, it asks under IDE CONFIGURATION whether the setting should be "SATA", "PATA", or "PATA + SATA". The internal drive is a SATA connection, and the default setting is "SATA" (even according to the manual). What should this be set as?

Good day i have mother board asus p5800-mx the usb port cannot work theirs no 5 volts in the port, pleas help me to resolve my problem thanks.

A) There are two USB headers on the motherboard.
They are rectangular in shape, and Blue in color.

One is to the immediate Right of the 3 white PCI slots.
Has 4 pins across the Top row, and 5 pins across the Bottom row.
May have USB56 printed on the motherboard next to it.

The second one is at the Bottom of the motherboard, below the Intel 82801EB southbridge chip; which is to the left of the CMOS battery.
May have USB78 printed next to it

(Turn motherboard photo 90 degrees to the Left, to be as it sits in your computer case)

EACH USB header supports TWO USB ports.

A Card Reader uses ONE USB header, with it's two cables.

Front Panel USB ports, are connected to one of those blue USB headers.
This USB header you know to be bad.
If the other USB header is not being used, connect to it.

The front of your computer is the Front Panel.
The USB ports in the Front Panel, should be connected by one common cable, and it ends in a plug on connector.

No? Not feasible?
Then suggest using a USB adapter card, in an open white PCI slot,

Product details indicate it has two internal USB headers.
This way you can connect the Front Panel USB ports to it.

Choose ANY O/S, and then download the manual.

Or, here is the direct link to the motherboard manual (PDF file),

Problem with USB port on Asus P5KPL-AM SE Motherboard

Older motherboards have USB 1.1 ports;
newer motherboards have USB 2.0 ports,
which are over 10 times as fast.

It is Windows (not your motherboard) that should do the "Plug-and-Play" thing for devices connected to your USB port(s).

Note that some devices are USB 2.0, and will *NOT* work when plugged-in to a USB 1.1 port.

Either get a newer motherboard, or get a PCI add-on card that adds USB 2.0 ports.
