it still turns off after windows opens up.

Hi, When you say it shuts down, does it try to reboot again or does it just shut down without trying to reboot? Also, can you get into bios? What operating software is it? xp...vista...? Hank

What operating system are you using?

If XP, see this link for intructions on starting the computer in safe mode (choose safe mode with networking) http://www.microsoft.com/resources/docum...

Once in safe mode, scan and clean your computer using MalwareBytes AntiMalware, download it here:http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-An...

Why would you be attemptin to install Norton 2008? The 2008 version slows down your computer quite a bit, I'd recommend getting the 2009 version which has been re-writen from scratch and does not slow down your PC.

Is this a laptop or desktop? Check that the fans are running, if the computer turns off completely it might be an overheating problem and the computer turns off to avoid damage to the components.
Also, try booting from the computer using your norton install CD and scan the computer.

Something is running in the background that is using processor time. Try shutting down NORTON (disconnect from internet first) Open several windows, play a game and play some music to stress the processor a bit, see if it is still happening. If it isn't Norton is your problem. Before I switched virus programs and ditched Norton, I had a lot of this going on. Norton seems to do a check every few seconds and I was never able to discover a way to turn that off. If you can handle the "techs" Call them and ask them to help you fix this... otherwise... Run the Norton Removal Tool to remove your Norton Anti Virus:

Norton Removal Tool

And then install Norton Anti Virus 2011 and activate it with your 2008 Product Key:

Norton Anti Virus 2011

When you say you have problems with a lot of Virus then install in safe mode and do there a full scan.

Windows is toast, my friend. I hope you have a good backup, and recovery disks. It's probably malware, but the bottom line is Windows needs to be reinstalled.

Network connection prompt error 6: handle is invalid

Hi glamredhel, Norton has removed the virus or Trojan & if you have windows system restore turned on the virus or Trojan will return once the system has re-booted. Open windows device manager & shut off system restore. Re-boot your system & re-scan your system with Norton. In your case Norton did not give you instructions on how to remove the virus. (Norton did that for you).
Once completed check windows update service for a possible update for your LAN. Asus does not have a separate LAN driver listed on Asus web site. The LAN driver is part of the chipset drivers. Remove your modem from the system & any software you installed with it. (If any). Restart your system. (If the system seems fine-good. Shut down the system & re-install your modem & any software. When completed do another windows restart. See if the modem functions (If your modem is either a cable or DSL reset it.
Shut down the system.
Located on the back of the cable modem or DSL modem you will find a tiny re-set button. Unplug the power cord from the modem. Take a pen & press the reset button for 10 seconds. Re-connect the power cord & boot the system. Check for internet connection.

The above are just a few item you should try.
Good luck glamredhel!
Post your findings.
Mike

ø First of All Shut Down your Computer.
ø Restart Computer and Keep Tapping F8.
ø Choose Safe mode with Networking and Press Enter. (Win XP or 2000).
ø Run Windows in Safe Mode Click Yes.
ø Restoring Windows to a previous point
ø Click Start, Programs or All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and then System Restore. The Welcome to System Restore window opens.
ø Select restore my computer to an earlier time, and click Next. The Select a Restore Point window opens.
ø Select a bolded date and a restore point, and then click next
ø (Note: - You need to choose a Date before the installation of Norton)
ø Click OK if a pop-up window about closing programs appears. The Confirm Restore Point Selection window opens.
ø Click Next. The computer should shut down and turn back on automatically after the restoration completes. The Restoration Complete window appears.
ø Click OK. The computer has now been restored to a previous time when it worked correctly.
ø (Note: - If an error message appears saying that the computer cannot be restored to the point you selected, try a different restore point)
After the System Restore is complete, and the computer starts successfully, update the computer software as follows: - 1). Update the system virus definitions. 2).Get the latest critical system updates using Microsoft's Windows update.
Once all this is Done you Need to Download and Install Norton Again.

HELP!!! Computer stopped working when anit-virus was installed?????

Assuming you are using windows xp. 1. Boot up into windows safe mode by pressing the "F8" key during boot process. 2. Choose "Safe Mode without networking" on the menu and after entering your desktop a pop-up will appear telling you that you are using windows safe mode, just press "OK" then uninstall Norton Anti-Virus. 3. Shut-down and/or reboot computer. Another alternative would be to boot into safe mode and perform a system restore. If you choose to do this, you still need to uninstall Norton Anti-Virus because a system restore will only fix just system files not programs that were installed. In other words, you will have a partial installation of Norton Anti-Virus in your computer. As to why this happened, could be a compatability issue with the use of Norton and some other program. Good luck.
