Question about Dell 1700n Laser Printer

2 Answers

My Dell 1700 prints half the sheet, then stops

I then have to open the back cover and pull it out. The printed image on the bottom section of what was printed is still "loose" and hasn't been fused to the page. I've tried it on two different computers and had the same problem. The page is still flat, it doesn't crinkle and get jammed. Any clues?

Thanks in advance!!

It doesn't have any maintenance fuctions in the software. I tried to clean things up the best I could with a can of air. Any other ideas?

I have the same problem. Open the back cover of the printer and in the centre of the rollers to feed the paper out there is a paper sensor (a lever assembly attached to a switch) that lets the printer know when the paper has 'arrived' at that point in the printing process and also when it 'leaves' that part of the printer. On my printer the top of the lever has somehow snapped off so the lever/switch isn't being activated when the paper arrives at that point and the printer assumes there is a jam somewhere. I have removed the lever and glued a small piece of plastic to it to replace the piece that's broken off. It's a fiddly repair and I've had to re-do it a couple of times. I need to find a replacement assembly but part seem to be hard to come by and I don't know the part number to do an internet search.

Any time an imaging drum is replaced on a 1700, 1710, or 1720 model dell laser printer, you must reset

2. Press and HOLD the Cancel Button (Red X)
3. When you see the LED's 'Chase' turn the printer off
4. Close the access cover, and turn the printer back on
5. Press the Continue Button (Green Triangle) to print a settings report
6. Under the section 'Cartridge Information', locate the item 'PHOTOCONDUCTOR COUNT=0K' indicating 'Zero Thousands'.
s now been reset, and you should now be able to print now ok

Started out with paper, would start to load paper them as soon as paper stared in would stop. After several tries it would work. Then it stoped taking paper at all. Each time you try to print it stops and...

First I would remove the paper tray and check the rollers and print path for any scraps of paper that may be tripping up a sensor. If all seems well, ...

Try this next: It will reset the printer's configuration info.
To factory reset your Dell 1700 series printer follow these steps.
  1. Turn off your printer
  2. Open the front cover (push the button on the left side)
  3. Hold down the "Continue" and "Cancel" buttons and turn the power back on.
  4. When the "Error LED" light on the control panel is solid, close the cover and release the "Continue" and "Cancel" buttons.
Tip: To print a configuration sheet push the "Continue" button twice. This will give your printers IP Address.

Photoconductor kit? Dell 1700 printer

The photoconductor kit is another word for the drum or imaging drum. All three words refer to the same part.

Here is a link from the Dell site for this model.
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/PopupProductDetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&cs=dhs&sku=310-5404

Once you replace the drum, the printer has to be manually reset. If this is not done, the printer will continue to give this print out. By resetting it, the counter is set back to zero. The drum is good for around 30k prints.

From the Online Manual for the 1700, to reset the counter:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/1700n/en/index.htm#online_documentation

To reset the counter, press and hold the Cancel button until all lights flash in sequence.

NOTICE: Resetting the imaging drum's counter without replacing the imaging drum may damage your printer and void your warranty.

The printing is clear but on the buttom of every page it is like a duplicate printing with grey color. What is wring on my printer or I need to change toner?

First thing to consider is a toner getting low but it can be a drum, fuser (fixer) or transfer roller. If it repeats the grey at a certain interval it's likely a roller in the fuser/fixer, the drum (light sensitive coated roller is all it is) or a failing transfer roller (it charges to pull the toner image off the drum onto the paper and hold it till the heat of the fuser bonds it to the paper). Easiest and least wasteful, and what Brother would tell you to do first, is to replace the toner. If it doesnt correct it you still have the new toner to use once the problem is corrected. By virtue of it being fine except the end of the page sounds like toner. One way to figure it out definitively is send a page while the exit door is open. Watch and once half the page is out of the exit door open the toner door to stop the printing. It wont hurt anything but will allow you to see the end of the sheet before it goes to the fusing unit. Of course you need to be very careful removing the sheet to prevent damage to the fuser. If you get the grey on the bottom of the sheet during the half sheet test I mentioned then it's in the image creation and transfer, not the fuser/fixing stage. Replace the toner and try a full sheet. If corrected it was the toner. If not then the drum or transfer roller would be at fault. Drum is user replaceable and while expensive it's another item you can store back on the shelf till you need it if the new drum doesnt help.Transfer roller needs to be replaced by a service person. You could do it but you would need to have the section of a service manual to show you what to do.

I'm getting ghost images on multi prints to the point it is unreadable, is this the drum or fuser?

The only way to tell is to start a print and power off when print is still inside. If you see the ghost before the fuser it's the drum, if clean before the fuser, it's the fuser. You can also open the back door and look at the fuser roller with a light, the fuser roller should be clean but if the roller has images it's time for a fuser.

I printed out more than i wanted to, a page is stuck half printed

You will need to remove the jammed page. If you can see it coming out of the printer, gentley pull it out. If not you will need to open the service cover, see you your manual, and remove it that way.

Please take a moment to rate my solution.
Thanks.
