SOURCE: Cleaning or unfreezing a drain in bottom mount freezer refrigerator

The drain for a GE bottom mount refrig is located under the plastic panel at the bottom of the refrigerator compartment under the crisper drawers. There are two plastic pieces, one is about six inches long and runs the width of the refrig compartment which is right at the door seal. This piece is held on by two plastic tabs located approximately an inch from each end. By inserting a small srew driver under the panel and lightly prying up you should be able to pull the panel straight out. The the other plastic panel can be easliy pulled out. Under the styrofoam cover you will see the drain behind the evaporator fan. It is a two inch by four inch metal valley pan at the back wall which feeds to a black pipe at the bottom and in the back of the refrigerator. If you are having problems with ice clogging the drain and stopping the fan blades from turning, chances are it is either the defrost thermostat (mimetal switch) or the defrost timer.

SOURCE: Compressor won't turn on. Lights turn on. Won't cool anymore.

Make sure that the defrost timer is not stuck in defrost mode also the compress may be stuck. you can purchase a compressor booster kit from your local appliance parts store for about $15.00.

Whilepool model gs6shamb00, Why a few second after the compressor shut off, the compressor knock loudly? The evap coil also shakes for 30 seconds to 1 minute. charlie T

I had accidentally overcharged a unit with freon one time (r410a freon), and when the unit stopped, the compressors rotor would spin backwards and make a loud "knocking" noise. This was on a scroll compressor, not a reciprocating compressor. Also, most compressors have a check valve, allowing freon to circulate in 1 direction only. And if it fails, when the compressor stops, the freon will rush opposite its normal direction of flow, and will sound off as a knocking noise(again, I've seen that on a scroll comp). That may make your indoor coil shake. I've seen/heard that make the copper lines shake but never the coil. Hope this helps! And FYI... Most ac service techs can check "superheat and subcool" as well as freon pressures. Without checking these 2 temperature measurements, we are just guessing as to how much freon is in the system. Make sure to ask politely beforehand for your service tech to do so PROPERLY when he checks the freon levels per factory specs, which should be on the units technical data located on the outdoor unit.

I have a Kenmore Coldspot model 106. When the motor kicks on, there is an extremely loud a knocking noise which continues until the motor stops. What is the problem? Can I fix it without buying parts?

the compressor has a spring loaded base that with time wears out and will make a knocking noise when starting or especially when turning off. some Tecs say its not much to worry bout other then the noise not sure where I stand on that issue though.

My KSRP25FNSS makes a strange knocking noise at each compressor shut down and sometimes during running. The noise is always a series of 5 knocks, very loud, in quick succession that telegraphs though

By you discription above it sounds like one of the three spring the supports the compressor pump has failed or broke. Now the only fix is to have the compressor replaced, but if the unit is still cooling, currently its a noise problem only. I hope this helps you. If this is still under a warranty, ask for it to be checked as if in warranty it needs to be replaced. Good Luck

My Whirlpool refrigerator makes a continuous knocking sound for about a minute or 2 then makes one louder knock and stops for a bit then does it again

Hello Barb;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service refrigeration technician.

Inside your compressor are two flat plate valves. Unfortunately, these plates are broken. This causes your compressor to knock loudly. You can confirm this. Pull your refrigerator out. Without unplugging, remove the bottom cover. Observe the compressor. You will see the compressor jerk and jump.

It is expensive to replace a compressor. Depending on your model it can cost between $450.00 & $650.00. The rule of thumb is: "If the cost of repair is 1/3 of the original value purchase a new unit".

Sorry for the bad news.

The center of the fridge where the doors seal is very hot. Took of back cover, coolant lines are extremly hot compressor making buzzing sound.

When you were at the back behind the compressor did ya notice that the fan thier by the compressor was running, what will make that center divider bar very hot (it's normal to be warm) is due to the fan by the compressor not running or the coil also near the compressor being clogged with dust. So check that fan and replace if not running and also be sure to clean that coil free of all the dust ( the coil should be cleaned every 6 months as normal maintiance)

My ac is extremely loud and vibrates the entire house. Is it supposed to do this. I have 4 other acs in my house and none of them do this. Sometimes the fan blows and that's fine but then it charges and...

This will need to have the compressor mounts checked...If fan only operation is smooth...and only happens when compressor is on, is a direct sign of vibration off compressor. Check the rubber foot mounts under compressor.....of course this requires removal and cover taken off

Trying to figure out where the knocking is coming from, on engine

It all depends how loud the knock is. A tapping valve can be caused by low oil level, or dirty oil. Topping up or changing oil will solve the problem. A really loud valve tapping is abnormal. Cars sometimes make what you call a spark knock when accelerating hard. Extremely loud knock coming from deep within the engine is a bad sign, which means the engine has failed. Further examination would reveal metallic residue on the dipstick.

New 14 seer split ruud heat pump makes very loud knocking noise

Well you may want to have a tech come out and check the freon level, but mostly when going into defrost, some units make alot of noise, the freon is reversed in the unit by way of the reversing valve, it makes a whooshing sound like freon is draining off, as far as the knocking noise, could be as I said in the beginning, might be low on freon, but it could be that, this particular unit does this, I have had units make some really strange noises in the past but functioned perfectly, hope this helped, please let us know, thanks again,
