Question about HP Compaq Presario CQ50-211NR Notebook
Screen wont turn on .the hard drive runs but no screen
I have the same problem. Right now, I suspect an overheated GPU. When I try toboot, I get normal led displays (power, hardrive activity) and the dvd drive spins. However, I get no display. The backlight comes on, but no display. Also, no video out to vga or hdmi devices. After testing the ram, I did some more research.
I found the following results: *HP (aka compaq) devices are notorious for overheating. *low grade solder used on the gpu (less lead content = lower melthing temps) *poor heat distribution engineering on the gpu
What is happening is that the computer is overheating, melting the on board gpu chip and breaking its circuitry.
One fix that I've seen in other HPs is to reheat the gpu to melt the solder and hope for the best. See this link for a video demo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctHTF3oNdxI)
I almost went through with this procedure for our laptop model, but didn't go through with it because of the surface mounted micro circuitry near the gpu.
Best of luck, I'll let you know if I actually go through with the procedure and what happens~
