As soon as the camera acts different form what you expect, you can "reset" any software problem, by switching off, removing the battery and memory card and then reinserting both and switching on again.
When you remove the battery, check it the contacts are clean and shiny. Do the came for the memory card. Use a bright light and eventually a magnifying glass to look in the camera, to the contacts there.
You can clean contacts with a dry cloth or cotton swabs. Never use anything sharp in or close to a camera.

Olympus e510 hot-shoe doesn't respond...

Have you tried cleaning the hot shoe contact? If the contact is dirty it may not communicate with the camera. The "contact" Its the metal "circle" in the middle of the hot shoe. Using a pencil eraser, rub the contact gently until you create eraser crumbs, then gently rub the "circle" with a soft cloth. See if this fixes it.

Red dye reduction

Hi,
You can find your manual here....www.olympus.co.jp/en/support/imsg/digicamera/download/manual/zoom/man_c725uz_e.pdf

You find how to disable red eye function on page no: 63 in that manual.

For quick reference i am giving the details briefly,

The flash modes are as follows:

AUTO FLASH:

Automatically fires in low-light and backlight conditions.

RED EYE REDUCTION FLASH:

This mode significantly reduces
the phenomenon of “red-eye”
by emitting about 10 preflashes
before firing the regular
flash. This mode works the
same as the auto-flash except
for the pre-flashes.

To change between flash modes:

1 Press the (flash) switch.
● The flash pops up.
2 Press the / (flash mode) button
repeatedly until the desired flash mode
indication appears.
● The flash mode changes ,
● If / is not pressed within 2 seconds after the selection screen is
displayed, the selection screen disappears.
● To de-activate the flash (Flash Off mode ), push the flash back into the
camera.
3 Press the shutter button halfway.
● When the flash is ready to fire, the
(flash stand-by) mark lights.
4 Press the shutter button all the way.
● The flash fires.

Hope my info solves your problem,
Thanx for using fixya,
Good Luck.
