I have seen many of these - Hopefully you do not have security screws holding the cover on the main body of the microwave. If you do, then you will have to find a special Security Tipped Screwdriver to remove the cover screws - typical is a torx with a security pin in the center of the hole - you likely will not be able to remove them otherwise. If you do not security screws, then simply remove them from around the back and likely one on the left side and slide the cover off the back of the unit. There is a lip that locks the cover to the frame. Typically on top where the power cord enters, is a small circuit board with a fuse holder, with again typically an ABC20 Amp slo-blow fuse - if you can't find a 20 Amp you can likely go with a 25 Amp fuse - If you have a meter, check the fuse for continuity ( most times you can't see inside this fuse and a meter will tell you if the one you remove is good or not).
Watch your hands - plug the unit and see if you have a display - then that's it - slide the cover back on, it locks on along the top and both sides and put back the screws

SOURCE: microwave no heat

The "HUMM" indicates a breakdown in the High Voltage Side. The loud "POP" was the breakdown. You have only four Components in the High Voltage side.

1. High Voltage Transformer. You can eliminate this as the problem. Why? If it was the problem it would have blown the line fuse, and would have given off a burned transformer smell.
2. High Voltage Diode. Usually will Burn or Pop when shorted, but will then OPEN the Circuit and there is no "HUMM".
3. High Voltage Capacitor. This is the Silver Can with the two terminals on top. It can SHORT internaly between the plates (the two terminals) and give the "HUMM".
4. Magnetron. This is my number one suspect. A SHORTED Magnetron.

There is an internal fuse, plus one or two thermostats or thermal cutouts.

You can probably find an exploded view by entering your FULL model number here: http://www.searspartsdirect.com

There may also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

If the fuse is good, it may be an open thermostat or thermal cutout (TCO) / thermal fuse on or near the magnetron or on top of the cavity / body of the oven.

If it goes dead for a while during or after cooking then comes back on, the magnetron is probably overheating and causing the magnetron thermostat to open.

Then when it cools, it closes the circuit and allows power through again.

When checking thermostats, if it has a hood fan thermostat, that should read open, as opposed to the others, which should read closed.

SOURCE: KENMORE MICROWAVE (HOUSEHOLD) LOCKED

It sounds like you press STOP two or three times to lock it. Maybe that (or another key) will unlock it.

The lock / unlock procedure will be covered in your owner's manual.

Or you can try a hard reset - unplug it from the wall for one minute, then plug it back in and try again.

If you don't have your manual, you can get one here. (Enter your model number without any spaces)

SOURCE: Start button on microwave does not work

Some numbers are missing off that model number. Would that be model 721.62622200?

(If not, please reply back with the correct model number off the tag)

If it's cooking with the programmed buttons, but Start is not working, it sounds like the keypad has failed.

The keypad for model number 721.62622200 is no longer available as a separate part.

So you'd have to buy the entire controller assembly, which includes the plastic frame, keypad, and circuit board, etc.

It is part # 4781W1M307A and it runs $110.10 at the Sears parts Web site.

The microwave runs and sounds normal, but it does not heat up the food. (We did run it at 100% power a few times, with no heat up) Do you have any suggestions to what the problem could be? We purchased...

Sorry to read about your problem.
It seems your have a general failure in the power control or switch failure on the unit. you said your unit has power, and things lite. Then it is more likely you have a control/switch problem,

Microwaves must be serviced by technicians due to the inherent dangers involved in repairing these appliances. Internal capacitors can retain a lethal electrical charge even though the unit is completely unplugged. A microwave radiation leakage test must be performed on the unit following any internal component repair

Kenmore 721 microwave fan turns on by itself

I have the exact same problem with my Kenmore Microwave model 721 that we bought in October of 2005. The Fan will just randomly turn itself on even when we are not cooking. It has been doing this for the last few months and is starting to become more frequent. There is no way to turn it off except to unplug it for several hours.
Was there a recall for this defect ?
