In any case, to update, you can do so via going to Settings - General - Software Updates. Make sure you are connected to electricity via USB to a PC/Mac or directly to powerline, and also make sure you are connected to Wifi
Sounds like you encrypted the drive. Under Computer, right click the drive and format it. You will lose all your data and there is no way around this. Write your password down somewhere if you can't remember it.
If i m not wrong, ur phone's OS is Windows mobile 6.5 and if u have downloaded latest version of Microsoft Active Sync then ur phone should be recognized as soon as u connect it.
Try to uninstall/update the Activesync first. then connect ur phone via USB cable (make sure the phone powered off).
after cable is connected , turn the phone on and see if it gets recognized.
