SOURCE: cleaning coils on air handler
i use a good medium bristle wire brush with smaller brisstles. gently scrape the surface of the intake side of the coil. clear a section about 6 inches square, then put a drop light on the other side of you can see light clearly through the area you cleaned then you can get by with what we call surface cleaning. continue to clean and vac with shop vac and brush, gently .do not crush or mash fins. dont get cut they are sharp. the only coil cleaner i would use is evap power self rinsing cleaner that has no alkalie or acid to eat up the coil. it disolves the algae on contact and rinses with drain condensate. after a good brush and vac you can gently use a water hose on med spray to flush thriugh the coil .put down towels, use a shop vac and **** out drain with a vac as you do it.unless you are impacted with lots of crud you can usually clean in place. if they are to bad call a servvice company and have them pump it down and pressure wash and sanitize it. with proper filtration a coil should never need cleaning, ever. get a price on an aprilair filter installed if you pay a pro to clean coil. filters last a year and no part to replace. filtration down to 3 microns and filters last a year at 42 bucks a piece. at least consider going to p[leated filters if you dont upgrade to a pro filter system. good luck, wear old clothes ,you are going to get dirty, but that is the joy of home ownership.
