I've had similar problems. First five channels have degraded picture even after fine tuning. Exchanged the unit with another unit; same problem. I also know someone that purcahsed a HCT TV and it had problems with channel scanning.

I have a new HCT HDVR-960S. It is the unit with a built in 250GB hard drive.

I turned it on yesterday, and now all I see is a half-black and half-white screen when I try to play a dvd or anything stored on the hard drive.

Any feedback as to how to get this thing back to normal appreciated...Ken in Chitown

Regarding the Black and white lines

You need to click menu scroll over to the right and select reset to factory settings.
I know you can not read the screen so try and follow the steps below.
After fixing mine by carefully reading the screens I went back and retraced the steps and counted.
Follow these directions. Do not go too fast or you may miss or lock up.
Turn the machine on.
Then with the remote
1). Click the button Settings
2). With the right arrow (blue directionals) click 5 times slowly. Slowly.
3). Click Enter button
4). With the down arrow (blue directionals) click it 2 times.
5). Click Enter button
This hopefully Resets your machine back to Factory settings.
It worked for me.

I purchased this same unit yesterday from the PX Power Zone. I hooked up the unit and even managed to record a few minutes of a show. I then went into setup and made a few changes. Now, I have no display at all from the unit. Does anyone know how to reset the unit back to factory settings? Please email me at Many thanks!

How do I run a channel auto scan?

There are many different ways, because each TV manufacturer calls each menu option something different. In your TV menu there should be an option that says Set Up, or Channels, or something similar. Your TV should be, Menu, pan right to Channel, select whether you are using Air (air meaning antenna, picking up channels that are broadcast free over the air) or Cable (only if you use cable with no box). Then the option below should be auto scan. Allow to run completely. Sanyo DP42D24 User Manual Channel

Hi gail dahl,
I am happy to help.
From the Video Menu the Tuning Band must be set to Cable and not to AIR or Antenna. You will nee to run Auto Scan for channels from the Menu also.
I have provided a link to download the manual.
