Time to take it to the repair shop unless you are experienced in this. You probably had the volume to high over a period of time causing the failure.

Just bought a nice looking galaxy dx44 but will not power on, is there a fuse or maybe a resistor that got blown from hooking up the power backwards?

If power was reversed, there is a 1N4007, 1N4003, rectifiers, 2 1000 microfarad 25 WVDC capacitors, a filter choke and a common mode noise filter that are likely to have taken the brunt of it. The choke likely burned out.

2 power leads is all it needs- one positive, one negative/ground.

It should have a 2SC1969 final C1969 should be the same.

I have installed a supermod on my radio clipped d11 and added varible pwr to the delta tune knob it worked fine for a couple of days the varible was touchy now it will key up but will not modulate. i...

  • Why would you cut d11 when you can adjust VR4 and have it sound so much better? When you cut d11 you put that modulation into overdrive. Put that diode back and adjust VR4 for 100% modulation. That is step one.
  • I assume you added variable power from J36. The problem with adding variable power and not switching the pot is that the wires not only have major loss, running to the pot. And two the stock potentiometer tend to burn up if not replaced with a potentiometer that adjust power by itself. Undo this so called "super mod."
  • Start with a 1969 final for better handling of power.
  • Adjust VR4 for 100% modulation.
  • You can pull the ferrite out of the pot next to the final transistor or you can remove j36 and add a 330uf capacitor (black stripe, negative) to the rear and bias the soldier side with a 33uf resistor. Soldier the resistor to the same soldier points of the Capacitor.
  • Adjust L14,L13 and L12 for power.

Burned amplifier and we cant determine what exactly it is,a capacitor or resistor or something.

Hi, capacitor burning is a seldom case. most burns happens on resistor for they handle currents and suffer resistance.

How to charge the lanzar 1.6 capacitor

typically you can charge or discharge large capacitors using a resistor. Not just any resistor will do. You will need one with high-enough resistance and wattage ratings or you'll burn up the resistor. I would use a 1/2W, 4.7kohm or a 1W, 1kohm. These are minimum values and you can use a slightly higher resistance but it will take longer to charge/discharge.

To charge, connect the positive terminal, then hold the resistor between the ground wire and the ground terminal for 30-60 seconds. Then connect the ground terminal. To discharge, disconnect both terminals, then hold the resistor across the terminals (do not reconnect terminals without charging). In either case, you can use your fingers to hold the resistor as DC will not shock you, but if the resistor gets hot it will burn you. I use needle-nose pliers to hold the resistor (just in case). Just be careful not to short the resistor leads or terminals with the pliers.

Explanation: For a standard cap 1 - 2 farads, the discharge voltage is up to 20V so we'll figure off of that. I would use at least a 1/2 watt resistor, a 1 watt could be safer, depending on the value. For a 1 watt, the current can be no more than .05A at 20V. For a 1/2 watt, only .025A. Let's say .04A and .02A, respectively. Ohms = Volts / Amps, so 20V / .04A gives us 500ohms. Double that to be safe (avoid overheating) and it's 1kohm. Same process for the 1/2W version will be 2kohm, but it's not as hefty, so I would recommend 4.7kohm.

How to adjust the dead key in a uniden pc78ltw

You change the dead key with the addition of 2 components to the board. There is no dial or pot inside to turn to adjust the dead key.

What you want to do to the radio is called a swing mod. If you are trying to adjust your dead key, it sounds like you are trying to run a linear amplifier. If that is the case, you should probably set your dead key to around 2 watts. Most amplifiers are good with 2 watts. If this is so, then do this:

Go to radio shack and get a 1/2 watt 100 ohm resistor, and a 100uf 35 volt electrolytic capacitor.

Open the radio and look for JV117. It is a jumper. It is located in the back left of the radio in front of the final resistor in front of the heat sink.

Use a de-soldering wick to remove the solder from the trace side of the board. Remove the jumper.

In the jumpers place put the capacitor. Make sure the black tab is facing the back of the radio, towards the final. This is very important because there is a positive and negative to the capacitor. If you do it backwards you can blow your radio.

Solder in the capacitor, then take the resistor and on the side you soldered, solder the resistor bridging the 2 pins of the cap on the trace side of the board.

How this works:

The resistor determines the amount of dead key. the bigger the resistor, the smaller the dead key, the smaller the resistor, the higher the dead key. (dead key will only go as high as it was before you put in the mod.) A 100 ohm resistor gives you about a 2 watt dead key.

ALSO! you are going to want to find VR4. Its a little pot towards the back right center of the board. Then turn it all the way to the left. This turns up your modulation, and will make the radio swing to full PEP wattage, around 20 watts.

If you have a watt meter that reads avg wattage then you can gain more wattage by adjusting L14. It is just right of VJ117. it is a white or brown plastic tank with a copper coil around it with a slug in the center covered by a little way.

*do this only if you have a meter, also, do not transmit on your radio without an antenna connected or a dummy load or you will blow the final.*

Remove the wax and then while saying a steady ahhhhh sound, slowly back out the slug until you have peak wattage,(when the needle no longer increases.) You do not want to back the slug out any more then is needed for full wattage, other wise you over bias the final and lessen the life of it. So once the needle stops going up while giving a steady ahhhh into the mic, back it in a hair just to make sure its not over biased.

And as always, if you are not comfortable doing this your self, take it to a radio tech at a radio shop. They are usually found at truck stops.

There is a fix for this on the web. You have to remove the control unit and replace a resistor or capacitor. I did mine and it worked like a charm. Takes a coupla hours. the resistor is less than a dollar.

Kds vs-f14

There is usually an identical resistor somewhere else on the circuit board, so if you cannot read the colors of the burnt one, you can read the colors from an identical resistor on the same board. If you just replace the resistor, it will probably just burn out again or damage another component, you have to find the cause of the resistor burning out, most likely an electrolytic capacitor failing. Look for bloated or seeping capacitors and replace those as well. Also look for broken or burnt toroid coils.
