Hi,

Powerline is far too expensive, and if someone turns on a blender or some other device with an A/C motor your internet goes down. And you would need at least two of the devices, one for your router, one for your XBox. Speed wise, power line can be faster than the traditional wireless G standard, but wireless G is plenty faster than your internet connection allready.

Wifi is good and it's cheap for the most part, the 360 wireless adapter would cost about the same as a powerline adapter, and chances are your setup is already wifi compatable. Wifi can have problems, turn on microwave and it can kill the connection. If you don't mind having a cord running, that would possibly be the cheapest, plus cat-5 is pretty much immune to interference.

But I would suggest either wifi/cat-5. Powerline is far too overpriced and problematic.

Thanks.

Weak wifi signal?

you have 2 possible solutions:
the easiest (but suboptimal) is to put buy a wireless repeater and install it half way between your access point and the point where you experience low coverage.

the best solutions is to buy a power line kit like this:

you can plug the one without the wifi to a power outlet near your wireless router, and connect the two devices by a network cable. then you can plug the second powerline (the one with the antennas) in a power outlet near the place where you need wifi signal. the second device needs a little configuration (just put same network name and password of your old access point).
this way you will have your a new wifi access point, that will connect to your internet connection by power wires in your house.

Comtrend powerline adapter

are you saying the connection between the two powerline devices is dropping? try moving the wireless adapter to a power outlet a little closer to the base router, they might be just a little too far away from each other right now. even though it worked for a long time, the device might be getting interference from some other electrical device on the line which causes it to act up.

Connected the Powerline adapters to my network, 1 into my Sky D-Link Wireless ADSL Router and one into the back of my PC. The powerlines can see each other but my PC doesn't get network connectivity.

This is the main disadvantage of Power-line devices.
1. Well firstly you need to make sure that the activity lights are ON on both the Power line adapters. 2. Don't use any Surge Protector or Extension cable, just directly to the wall. 3. Try in the same room first. 4. Power line devices works well where wall sockets are interlinked with common wiring as it is the mode of data transfer.
You can just power cycle the device, there is nothing much you can do about this. If its new device, get it replaced

I'm using an 85Mbps Powerline Ethernet Adapter. The internet on the main computer (which is directly connected to the router) is fine with no interruptions. However i'm not having a smooth internet...

EOP connections can see interruptions when the power line itself has noise on it. Air conditioning motors, hair dryers, fans...basically anything that can create "noise" on a power line can cause interference to ethernet over power lines. The first thing to do is see what may be causing the intermittent nature of the internet cutting on and off. We moved to EOP over a year ago and experienced the same problem in two rooms of our house. In both cases we found that the upstairs Air conditioner unit, when it was on, was throwing so much noise on the power line that it was interrupting the signal and our wall units would stop "chatting". When the unit cycled down, everything would work fine again. We had an electrician come out and install EMC noise filters to that took care of the problem with the air conditioners adding this noise and we've been trouble free save for the use of a hair dryer now and then.

Powerline data transition speed can be effected by many things. Distance, equipment producing electrical noise on the power lines, being on separate circuits, or even running though power filters or surge protectors can cause slow or failed connection.

Make sure the adapters are connected directly into the wall, remove any electrically noisy equipment on the circuit between the adapters, and try to make sure the adapters are on the same electrical circuit. These things should help.

I have two Belkin powerline adaptors 200mbps type

Your hard disk is failing and should be replaced. Have you tried to press F1 when you get the message? If this doesn't help try to enter the bios and disable S.M.A.R.T.
Your first goal is to save the data so please do that before it's too late.

My download speed has been reduced from 20 Mbits to 2 Mbits after having plugged in a set of XE102. Why? Can I do something ? Regards Mogens Villy Møller Copenhagen Denmark

The top speed between the devices is 14 Mb/s, so they will never attain the 20Mb/s speed you had with you router / modem.

  • Powerline products work better when plugged into the wall without power strips, extension cords, surge protectors, or uninterruptable power supplies.
  • Passwords. Powerline products have both a network password, and a device password. A particular device's password, which is not changable, is printed on the Powerline product label. Once you have collected all your Powerline device passwords, use the encryption dialog box, as described on pages 9 and 12 of the XE102 User's Guide, to change the network password. (Without password protection, it is possible, although unlikely, for someone very nearby to access your network.)
  • If you changed the default network password, make sure that all the Powerline products use the same network password.
  • If you've moved a Powerline unit, or disconnected the cables, your other network devices may need about 5 minutes to refresh their information about the Powerline's current status.
  • If you have earlier Powerline products, switch to the encryption used by later products. (Early versions of XA601 and XE602 are known to have compatibility problems with newer models.)
  • To test whether a house's electrical wiring is contributing to Powerline problems, plug units in the same room. Examples of potential problems are:
    • Old fuse boxes.
    • Old wiring that does not meet modern wiring building codes.
  • Swap devices to isolate the problem to a particular Powerline unit.
  • Reset the Powerline adapters to the default settings using the utility.
  • Use all the same Powerline models for best connectivity. Also, software for one model may not work for another model. In particular, remote and advanced features may not work between Powerline manufacturers.
  • Powerline is not directed at businesses, however it may work in a business environment, anyhow. See Assessing Powerline for Business Environments. In some cases noise can be limited by placing line conditioners or surge protectors between the source of the noise, and the Powerline units. (Not between the units.) Consult a professional electrician to evaluate your electricity's noise and to suggest remedies.

Need directions for router

Perform a factory reset of the router. Locate the reset button on the back of the unit. Hold it in with a paper clip for 15-30 seconds then release. Reboot the router and it will be back to factory default. Log into the device, and check the firmware. Look online to make sure that you have the current version, and update it if you do not.
