Testimonial: "I appreciate your response, we own a car/tire repair business, I could have called that one! I wrote that frustrated, abbreviated question In the wee morning hours of frustration. My Oreck DTX1400 has a On/Off Power Head switch as well as it also works as a Unit On/Off Switch (schematics part 60A) if the pedal on the canister is on. My dealer/repair person used the switch Oreck lists (Part #82267-01) as the replacement part, which is the part that was used but now the unit cannot be turned off at the handle. You must use the pedal on the canister to turn it off. Has the switch been reengineered? Can the unit be repaired to work as it did or am I out of luck?"
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Hoover.com doesn't have a manual specific to your model but there is one similar which will show how to remove the upper handle from the body.
Do you have a replacement switch? If not I believe you can buy one from Hoover (the switch and/or the upper handle assembly). Unfortunately your model isn't listed on the website, is this a new vacuum? I recommend giving them a call, that would be the easiest way.
Also remember when working with electronics to unplug the vacuum. Even when there is no power residual electricity can remain in the wires. If you feel unsure, take it to a repairman.
Hope this helps!

Can I get a wiring diagram of the handle on an Oreck XL 2.
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Oreck XL Ultra Bagged Upright Vacuum. The best place to get an owner’s manual is from the Oreck Factory of which I will supply for you listed below or you can download the owner’s manual from the Oreck Website. . I would check with your local Oreck dealer or vacuum dealer in your area to see what is going on. This is most unusual for this to happen. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

Removing the handle assembly should be easy after removal of the two screws. It may be binding or hanging up on the self-propel cable...or the plastic may just be stuck/binding. Note that the handle slides in and out of the vacuum unit along the same axis as the two screws (i.e. slides straight off the back towards you when you are standing behind the vacuum). Try to pry it off gently w/thin-bladed screwdriver or butter knife (careful now!). Not sure about the smoking issue but you may have a severely plugged filter and the unit is overheating as a result. Check that out immediately/first to avoid fire or expensive motor burnout.

My wife picked one up on the side of the road that someone had tossed. The power switch would not turn off. I took the two bolts out of the top part of the handle, and then removed the screws along the back. This will remove the required panels to access the On/Off switch. Once I found the actual on/off button, I found it to be frozen in the "ON" position. After manipulating it for a few minutes, I got the switch to work. This machine now operates great, and I now have a Hoover :)
