Question about Televison & Video
I've had the TOSHIBA RDVX45 45 for 8 MONTHS AND AM GENERALLY DELIGHTED WITH IT (ONE OR TWO MESSAGE FAILINGS THINGS NOT MADE CLEAR, BUT THAT APART A TYPICAL TOSHIBA - REALLY GREAT). LAST COUPLE OF DAYS DVD DEAD IN WATER. LOAD A DVD TO PLAY AND TAKES A LONG TIME TRYING TO LOAD AND THEN DELIVERS MESSAGE "DISC ERROR."
THIS APPLIES TO BOTH HOME RECORDED DVD's AND BOUGHT ONES GENERALLY MOVIES.
ATTEMPTS TO RECORD GET SIMILAR, NOT IDENTICAL MESSAGE.
DON'T WISH TO WAIT TO GET WARRANTY REPAIR DONE - WILL TAKE MANY WEEKS-ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO WHAT TROUBLE IS? IF ITS NOT TOO DIFFICULT AND DOESN'T REQUIRE SPECIALISED TEST EQUIPMENT MIGHT TRY MYSELF.
A 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Maybe the laser is unable to focus on the smaller pits and lands of a DVD disk but can see the relatively large pits and lands from a CD just fine. This may be solved by using a CD/DVD cleaner disk. It's a disk with small brushes on it that attempt to brush dust from the laser's lense. They don't always work but that's what I'd try.

not much of a help but sounds like your record head is bad on the vhs heads,
use cleaning tape try that, if that fixes great, if it helps but not fully there, you might have to clean them by hand with very soft paper town and rubbing alcohol rub side to side very easy , if none of the above work you have a bad record head or record board, not worth repair vs cost

You need to go into the set up menu and select recording options. On the recording options menu, scroll down to dubbing options. On the dubbing options menu select either VCR to DVD or DVD to VCR.
Recording and Dubbing are not the exactly the same thing. You use the record buttons to record TV directly to VCR/DVD you use the dubbing buttons and set up to record DVD to VCR or VCR to DVD.
Hope this helps.
