Can the unit operate without the remote control

Yes, by pressing the power button on the unit. It is factory set to cool to 68 degrees and maintain that temperature. To access any other settings you must use the remote control. The part # for the remote is CRMC-A750JBEZ

Which symbol on remote is cooling? I dont have a manual but is on the wall, symbols are a fan on the bottom LH, an a sun on top LH I think? Are you able to help me with modes to select please?

Symbols:
1. fan leaves - Fan only
2. Rain drop- Dry mode
3. Snow flake-Cool mode
4. Sun- Heat
5. A or AU- Auto mode.
L-means fan speed low
M-means fan speed of med H-means fan speed of high.
To get proper cool, mode "cool" and less 3 degree minimum than your room temp.
To get proper Heat mode "Heat" and 3 degree more than room temp. Hope, helpful

What does the mode button do?

The mode button can be changing it from low speed to high or if it is a heat-pump, from heat to cool. Normally, its the mode you want to run it in, if its only an a/c unit, it would have to be low cool, med cool, or high cool. Its unfortunate you have misplaced the manual as it can come in handy for trouble-shooting in the future. I would go back where you bought it and say it didn't come with one.

Air condition not cooling

If this is a heat pump it sounds like the reversing valve is stuck in the heat mode, replacing it requires opening the sealed system, which needs to be done by a licensed ac repairman.

I have a 8 years old window ac. It's working quite ok. I just want to know which mode is safer low cool or high cool when humidity is high but temp. is about 32-34 degree celcius. Technican advised me to...

Its not a mater of safety. Its only a matter of witch is best for you. If you want to maintain the temp then leave it on low temp. If you want to save money then you can switch it to power saver mode on high to bring the temp down. Hope this helps. Good luck.
