How do I change the 3 prong wall mount to a 4 prong wall mount for a dryer?

Since you are asking, I would not suggest you try it. 240 volts is deadly. It would be easier to change cord to 3 prong and then add grounding wire from back of dryer to cold water pipe. The 4th prong is a ground connector, new standard for safety. Your house wiring may not be set up for it, or it might be. Unless you know what you are doing, let someone who does do it for you. Be safe pls

I have a 4 prong tanning bed 220v and my appliance outlet at home only accepts the 3 prong plus such as the ones you see on a dryer. How can i get this converted to a 3 prong so that i can plug it in? Or...

It is because you tanning bed requires L1 and L2 (240V) and a seperate neutral, and a ground. You need an electrician to install a proper outlet. A dryer (years ago) was installed without a neautral. However per NEC electrical code even new dryers have to have 4 wires. Do not attempt to use on 3 wires !

Changed my dryer from a 3 prong to a 4 prong pig tail. I have the red w/ red, white with white, black with black and the green is grounded, but no power. Any idea what my problem is?

Should have 220v between the Red and the Black. White in the middle and the green to the case of the dryer.
But sometimes colors mean nothing because the wall plug may be
wired wrong.
Check breaker and the wall plug for 220v.

My 220 plug is a three prong and the used dryer I bought has four prongs. Is there some type of adaptor I can buy to connect the two plugs such as what used for adapting a 110 line that has two different...

Hello Doris, You really don't want to get an adpater for this, (even if you could find one - they're not at all common) since the thickness of adding in an adapter would make the dryer stick out further from the wall, etc.

What you need to do is to get a new "pigtail" for the dryer that has the three (3) prong plug that matches your 220 Volt-AC wall outlet. These are available at most Home Depot, Lowes, Sears, or at any appliance or Hardware store. They don't cost all that much and will provide you with the correct plug and cord set for your house's electric dryer outlet.

The four (4) prong cord & plug has a separate ground wire in them, while the standard thre (3) prong plug uses the netural as the ground, or has a separate green wire running from the dryer cabinet to either a grounding screw on the wal plate, or to a ground ******** a water pipe (typically found in older homes)

Just be sure to unplug the dryer before changing the cordset out for the 3 prong one. Make sure the power is also off at the breaker panel too. Now at the rear of the dryer there is a small access panel where the cordset goes into the dryer. Remove that panle and you'll see three (3) connections on the panel along with a Green Grounding connection.

The connectors that get the power are the outside connectors, these are "HOT" and get 120 V-AC each (120 x 2 = 240 Volts AC) while the connector in the middle is the NEUTRAL connection point.

The wiring is straightforward and there should be a simple wiring diagram either on the access panel or the connection points should be labeled for each of the wiring fasteners (screws or nuts)

Just be sure to get the fasteners tight, and the new 3 prong cordset you buy should be long enough to reach from the dryer (when it's pulled away from the wall) to the house outlet. Typically they come in either a 3-4 foot length or the longer ones are 5-6 feet long. If in doubt, get the longer cordset. You can also check the wrapper of the new cordset, as they provide a simple wiring diagram also, to help you install it correctly.

Just be sure to add the included strain relief, as instructed, onto the cordset and put the access panel back on when you're done and you'll be all set to use that "new" used dryer!

I hope you find this Very Helpful and best regards!

Changing a 3 prong plug into a regular outlet plug.

Your plug is for 220v and a regular wall outlet is 110volts. It simply will not work. You will burn out your dryer, and place yourself at risk of electrocution.

I have both washer n dryer that are 220v 4 prong each but theres only one 220v 4 prong wall outlet. do they make splitters for this ?

I would say no. I have never heard of a 220V washing machine, as a washing machine has no need for 220V. In any case though you would need to get the appropriate wire, cord and outlet and install a separate circuit for the washing machine.

Brand new dryer threw braker twice, then no heat and timer stopped working. Electrician tightened connections on wires to dryer settings dial, had heat for one load, then same as before. Replacement dryer...

might want to check your dryer outlet. If the terminals are loose in there it could cause you problems. If your dryer plug is a 4 prong you might be loosing one of your 220v legs due to a short . As the dryer runs the wires and connections will heat up and expand , if there is a faulty wire or connection then it may loose connection after a load. could be quite dangerous and a very possible fire risk so i would check it out ASAP . if the outlet is old they sell for about $20 at you local home depot or lowes home improvement. for a 3 prong plug you need to hook up the black and white wires on the brass screws and the copper ground wire to the green screw. in a 4 prong application you hook up the black and red wires to the brass screws, the whit wire t the silver screw and the copper ground wire to the green screw .

If your new dryer is supposed to be a 4 prong plug and you have it with a 3 prong cord then you will run in to issues . The difference being a 4 prong electric dryer is a dual voltage unit where it needs both 220v and 115v to operate correctly, where a 3 prong dryer only has 220v and the earth ground. if your not familiar or comfortable with electricity please call a qualified electrician to come hand handle the work. if not done correctly it can cause fires or possible electrocution
