Question about Gateway M305CRV Notebook

1 Answer

MT6451 Display will not work.

We have a Gateway MT6451 laptop. The pc comes on but display won't work. Gateway (being it is out of warranty) had to me to do a 'power drain'. When I took out battery (while pc still connected via ac adapter) the pc shut off completely. No lights on at all. Couldn't power up by being plugged into the wall. What could be the problem? I don't understand why it just quit working. Also, the ac adapter gets really hot.

Thank you very much. As for the soldering my husband may be able to do it. As for the cord, it is a PA-1900-15. It's the Gateway cord that came with it. I think it is a Liteon or something.

We will try the solutions you mentioned. A power cord is MUCH cheaper than a pc. :o).

My son just unscrewed the back and with the cord plugged in the fan comes on for a couple of seconds and then turns off. Could that also keep the computer from starting. We have a desktop that does that, but it starts and says 'computer will shut off duen to cpu fan not working'.

  • r_bourn Jun 23, 2009

We get the pink and blue light on the front that comes on, fan is very temporary and nothing else. No beeps, nada! :-( Neither one of the lights even flicker as computers do when everything is booting up.

When we had taken it to Geek Squad they automatically said it was the display. I'm going to try to plug it in to a regular moniter in my sons room. If it works that way, then I guess that means it is the display. If not, I will be calling around to see if I could take it in and at least get an estimate. That will be the only FREE thing. Lol

Hello

It sounds like your AC cord or the female plugin soldered onto the motherboard has gone bad and will no longer make a connection to charge the battery or power the laptop on.

You would have to try a new power cord to find out which is the problem. If the cord fixes it, then it was just a bad cord (as you said it gets very hot, this maybe a sign of a cheap cord that has gone defective).

If the cord is not to blame, then the female plugin is loose and there is little you can do unless your an expert at soldering.

Post back with anymore questions or comments for additional help. Thank you for choosing Fixya!

A cord is by far much cheaper than a PC. You can also call around at some local electronic/Computer Stores and find universal ac adapters for laptops. Make sure you check and see that its compatible with your laptop (theres a list on the back of the package).

If it works you can keep it if it doesn't at least you can get your money back easily.

Well it's hard to say....on one hand that could just be the initial surge of electricity before the faulty component quits working.

It could also mean that the faulty component is in the laptop and not the cord.

The weird part is how it quit working after you removed the battery. What happens when you put the battery back in and try and turn it on do you get lights, fans, beeping sounds ?

  • Quickfx PC Repair Jun 23, 2009

You can try that, thing is if it was the display...you would get lights...fans...and system beeps during boot you just wouldn't see anything.

Your laptop is having power problems, seeing as it wont charge nor run directly from the power cord.

Keep the battery in, and try a new cord to troubleshoot the power problem as weve talked about before. Try your Best Buy store for those universal laptop power cords I mentioned.

Test it then post back and if that problem get's fixed we can move on to your original problem of no video, if it still exists.

Problem loading OS on Gateway MT6451, Main File Error

This looks like a corrupted file in the boot section or a virus attack. the only solution is to reinstall the OS. there is no hardware error, if you had any hardware error the display will not be working fine. reinstall the Windows OS.

Please encourage us if this tip was helpful to you.

Hdd pasword for gateway mt6451

There is no way to get around a hard drive password as the password is not in the BIOS it is stored on the control board for the hard drive itself.

The only option is to send it off the a Data Recovery company.

check the panel to make sure the panels are the same model number there are more then one part number for gateway lcds for your model and if your laptop uses the xga screen and your not replacing with the correct panel then you will get the problem you are seeing now.even thought the inverter and back light are the same the panel are very differant.

No powerup

Unfortunately, you can't solve this problem. What I have learned as the tech working on a customers gateway mt6451 is that Gateway dropped the ball when they bought a cheap (they spent 5 cents instead of 20 cents) motherboard component that allows the adapter to charge battery and run the notebook without the battery installed, the component seems to have a 1 year if that life. I am surprised they haven't been sued or forced to extend the warranty (like HP had to with their dv8000 series notebooks) althought they would have to replace the motherboard with one that has an improved component on it. How do you sue a company or force them to extend the warranty for a replacement that is made with a better component?

Video card

You do not give a reason for wanting to add a video card to this laptop, whether the video is not working or you just want to upgrade. I just looked at Gateway's support site and it appears the video that is standard with your laptop and motherboard is an integral part of the motherboard and cannot be replaced or upgraded.

I have seen bad ram or loose ram cause the issue. Re-seat the ram.
