I am trying to get at hard drive on Gateway 504Gr. I cannot get the side off --- the 'screws' if that is what they are are inverted and too tiny to get any screwdriver in. this tiny things are hold

Margaret,

As you face the front of the Gateway 504gr desktop computer, the Left side panel removes.
Looking at the BACK there are two Thumbscrews to remove.
These are located along the edge of the Side Panel itself;
One located near the Top, and one located near the Bottom.

The thumbscrews may just loosen, and not come out. (Each thumbscrew is supposed to be held on by a small circular clip)

Once they are loosened all the way pull back on the Side Panel using the indented fingergrip molded into the side panel.
Pull back, and then when the panel stops, ease the side panel out.

The Side Panel has 'hooks' made into it, that match up into corresponding slots in the metal computer case frame.
This is why the side panel only slides back so far, then is eased to the outside.

With the Side Panel removed you will note there is a metal frame around the Harddrive. (Harddrive Caddy is the name of the rectangular metal frame)

Remove the power cable to the harddrive, and the data cable.
Remove the one or two Philips head screws which fasten the harddrive to the harddrive caddy.
Slide the harddrive back and remove.

(WATCH your fingers! There are very sharp metal edges present!)

Have any additional questions concerning this please post back in a Comment.

I just bought a Dell DHS computer without a harddrive at a yard sale, how do I install a hard drive for it

First you have to make sure you bought the right kind of hard drive (IDE or SATA) to make the installation and connection easier. IDE drives have a set of prongs or pins that stick out. SATA is the later type and does not have prongs or pins sticking out. You just turn the laptop over and remove the cover where the hard drive will be housed. Usually it will have an icon of 3 circular discs on it. Most laptops will also require a Caddy that the drive sits in before it goes into the laptop. And some might require a interface.

I suggest you look on ebay and see if your computer's make and model requires a hard drive caddy or interface.

http://www.ebay.com

In the search box just type your computer's make and model followed by hard drive caddy. Example: Dell Latitude D610 Hard Drive Caddy

In the search box type this is see if it requires an interface: Example: Dell Latitude D610 Hard Drive Interface

Pavilion dv4 1431us how to remove the hard drive. Don't know which section is the hard drive screw to unscrew.

The Battery Compartment Cover is to the outside.
(By the way. Have all power sources removed from the laptop. The AC adapter {Charger}, and the Battery)

Laptop upside down, face the Battery Compartment to the top.
The long middle cover in the middle, under the Battery Compartment Cover is the Harddrive Compartment Cover.

On the Left side of the Harddrive Compartment Cover are two screws to remove. One in each outside corner.
After the screws are removed, lift up on the Left side to remove the cover.
(They may just loosen to a loosened state, and not actually remove)

The Harddrive Compartment Cover is 'hinged' on the right side, with a couple of plastic tabs coming from the cover itself. After it is tilted up far enough so that these tabs will come free from the slots they're in, the cover can be removed.

There are 3 screws which hold the Harddrive Caddy in place. (The Harddrive is mounted to a sheet metal Caddy, which goes across the top of the Harddrive, and down each side)

The first screw is in the Middle to the Left outside.
The other two screws are on the Right, and are on the corners.

After removing the screws you will see a Black strip of cloth/plastic coming from the Left side of the Harddrive/Caddy combo.

The Harddrive is eased up slightly on the Left side, and pulled to the Left side with the strip of cloth/plastic.
(On the Right side of the Harddrive is the interface. The pins that come out of the Harddrive. These pins insert into a female socket in the laptop)

The Caddy around the Harddrive is mounted to the Harddrive with 4 screws.
Two on EACH side.
Holding the Harddrive in the direction it came out of the laptop, (Interface pins to the Right), look at the mounting screw on the Right side.
The one that goes through the sheet metal Caddy, and fastens it to the Harddrive.

Now look at the same screw on the Left side. It goes through a tab.
Remove these screws, and DON'T loose them, or mix them up with the other screws.
(Use a multi-compartment container. You can use a clean egg carton in a pinch)

Remove the screws from the other side.
Install the new harddrive in the Caddy, then install the Harddrive/Caddy assembly in the laptop.
DO NOT overtighten the screws.

Hard crive crashed,

When my hard drive went down a few months ago I bought an external hard drive caddy off ebay for about £13, best £13 pound I ever spent. I installed it into the external caddy, plugged it into the USB port and it worked brilliantly, if the hard drive still doesnt work their are many data recovery firms out there, but be warned they are quite expensive, this usally involves sending the said hard drive off and they send the desired files back to you on a DVD. Hope this helps, Paul

Figured this out...
1)  Flip laptop over, keep front of laptop closest to you and hinges away from you 2)  Remove cover with cylinder/harddrive icon (2 screws) 3)  Remove small single silver screw near the front (close to you) of the laptop in the center of the metal harddrive caddy (the caddy may hold one or two hard drives) 4)  Pull the plastic tab on the left toward the outside of the laptop... the whole caddy with harddrive(s) inside will shift to the left, disconnecting it from the motherboard and lining up the caddy for removal. 5)  Lift the entire bracket straight up
To remove the primary harddrive (the only one present in my model) you must remove the blue L-shaped circuit board from the caddy. 1)  Flip the caddy over 2)  Remove the three screws with slightly larger head diameters around the perimiter of the caddy 3)  Push/slide/jiggle the circuit board so the sata connectors release from the hard drive(s). 4)  Unscrew the hard drive from the caddy
