How to turn off answering machine

I prefer the vmail for telephone provider to pick up instead of the answering machine. How do I turn this function off on the base? I've noticed if plugged in Line 2 only the machine will not pick up, but if plugged into Line 1/Line 2 the machine will pick up.

SOURCE: no ring

This is more likely a faulty socket, make sure it has a master socket with a capacitor in it

How do i get my vmail

The 6041 isn't an answering machine. If you have an answering machine connected to your phone line, consult its documentation. If you subscribe to a voicemail service offered by your telephone company, contact them for information and assistance.

When I receive a call and am not at home, the operator says I am not available instead of going to the answering machine. I am getting no messages.

Sounds like you have voicemail from your service provider and it might need to be activated before allowing messages to be recorded . If you do have voicemail on your number and it is set to answer after 3 rings and your answer machine is set to answer after 4 rings, then the caller will never get to your answer machine. Voicemail is often automatically added by service providers, especially if you have recently changed service providers or your service provider has upgraded their telephone switch equipment. I suggest you call your service provider's customer service number and ask them if your telephone line has voicemail and if you don't want to use it, have them disable it. If the service provider says you do not have voicemail then report the problem as a trouble on your telephone line.

I can record an OGA, but when people call they get the automated default message. How can I set the OGA so that it replaces the default message?

Once you record your own message, it replaces the default one. If callers are still getting a different announcement, it's likely they aren't ever reaching your machine. Make sure that your telephone line voicemail service isn't picking up the calls instead. I've known several people with this same trouble, and they needed to modify their home voicemail (or whatever your service provider calls theirs) settings or turn it off. Then their phone answering machines worked properly.

I have voicemail through my telephone company. Recently my SAMSUNG SGH-D980 phone system has been answering the calls for voicemail, instead of going to my phone company voicemail. I am being left messages that I cannot retrieve! I would like to "turn off" the voicemail function of my phone system. I'm not sure why the phone changed from working "properly" to now picking up voicemail calls. Thank you for any help you can give me!

Our AT&T 1725 has quit recognizing when the phone is ringing. The phone keeps own ringing instead of beign answered.

There are a couple of things to try. First is to check the cable & plug that connect the 1725 to the telephone line. Disconnect the phone line from the back of the answering machine, plug it into a known working telephone, using cell phone (or another land line) call the phone number and see if the phone rings.

If it doesn't, replace the line cord and try again.

If it does ring, check the optioning to make sure it is set for, say 2 rings.

Also, is the telephone line a regular telephone company POTS line or is it one that is being provided by a cable modem? If your phone service is being provided by a cable company, the media converter might not be putting out enough voltage for the answering machine to realize that the line is ringing.

If everything is correct, replace the answering machine.

Message box says full, but machine shows 0 messages

Do you also have a telephone-company provided answering feature on your line (such as Verizon's home voice mail)? I've known other people who got this service as part of a package from their phone company without realizing it, and had just the same trouble. Your callers may be reaching that instead of your answering machine.

Most companies alert you to waiting messages through "stutter dialtone." When you pick up your handset you'll hear two or three short bursts of dialtone before it goes steady. This is your signal to pick up your voicemail messages. Are you hearing this?

Check with your telephone service provider if you are unsure. If your telephone answering machine says it hasn't taken any messages, the full box message must be coming from them.

Depends on your vmail system and telephone system. If you have a cadence vmail or svmi-8, you must go into system programming on your telephone system and program the key on the phone.

Setting the voicmail

Voicemail or telephone answering device (TAD). There is a BIG difference. Voicemail is product of your telephone service provider. If you have voicemail, most providers have a solution to this that you must arrange through them. If you have an answering machine, you can set your Brother to TAD mode. In TAD mode, if your answering machine picks up, (you must set your answering machine to answer in less rings than your fax), your fax will "eavesdrop" to listen for the fax tones from the sending machine. If it hears these tones, it will disconnect your answering machine and accept the incoming fax. If it does not hear the tones, it allows the answering machine to record the incoming message. If you are home. If you answer the call and hear a tone every 2.5 to 3 seconds, that signals an incoming fax. Simply touch *51 on the keypad of the phone you picked up on. You will hear some shrill tones. That is your fax machine attempting to receive the incoming fax. Hang up the phone you are on and it will receive the fax. In any case, make sure that the receive mode is NOT set to AUTO. Set the receive mode to TAD or MANUAL. If these instructions were not clear enough, let me know and I will send you DETAILED instructions. You can find the manual here: http://www.brother-usa.com/Data/Documentation/Fax/User/UM_FAX2820_FAX2920_MFC7220_MFC7225N.pdf If you need additional assistance, please let me know before you rate this solution.
