Question about Pentair Minimax NT Heater

Flame wont stay lit

My heater wants to start but doesn't. Fan turns on when thermostat light comes on. I hear flame for one split second then dies. Fan continues to run. Gives me error code 4- fan failure, even though fan is the only thing working

Works when i jump the wires to the pressure switch, but the switch also will work when I apply vacuum to it. Not sure if it is just not getting enough pressure/ vacuum to throw the switch, or if the switch is actually bad. Leaning towards the fan, but thats a more expensive guess I'm sure.

Sounds like a flame sensor problem. The board is not getting the proper signal from the flame sensor so it thinks the burner did not light and shuts the gas supply off. It keeps the blower operating to ensure that no gas is accumulated in the burner area. I suggest you contact a local mechanical contractor to service your heater.

My heater isn't blowing any heat. I hear the fan come in, and i think i hear the gas come on, but nothing comes out of the vents. The fan only comes on for a couple of minutes and then goes off.

Ok so here is a sequence of the heater lighting and the solution for your problem...
1. Thermostat calls for heat. 2. Draft inducer motor starts. 3. Pressure switch attached by a small plastic or rubber tube senses the negative pressure produced by the draft inducer and closes. 4. Draft inducer runs for 30 seconds to a minute before you hear a gas hissing sound. The ignitor did not glow, the flame sensor (a small metal probe about 1/8" in diameter, with a white porcelain base) does not sense the flame, so after 8 to 10 seconds the hissing sounds stops with no ignition of gas to heat your home. Your furnace shuts down and goes into a lock out condition until you turn your power switch back off and on again. Then the sequence starts all over again with no ignition of the gas. Solution:You probably need to purchase and install a new ignitor. I would suggest that you inspect your ignitor closely for cracks.Make sure you do not touch the ignitor with your bare hands. If you do not visually see a crack, then you could have a furnace control board problem or a limit, rollout switch problem. Please see "limits, rollout switches & furnace control boards" further down on this page. The furnace's control board might not be supplying the voltage to the ignitor. If your furnace lights and the gas stays on for 8 to 10 seconds, then shuts right back off, then you need to clean your flame sensor with light sand paper or steel wool. You might need a new flame sensor, but most of the time they can be cleaned an will work well after cleaning. Please see the pictures below to help you identify a flame sensor.
Thanks and I hope this helps. Feedback apprec.

I have a few issues with an old probably dinosaur Coleman Presidential III 7995a-856 Heating unit. I've had 3 different repairmen look at it and they're clueless. The main pilot will light and stay lit...

if the pilot is clean and and strong then this should play on to the thermocouple , i take it you have changed the thermocouple , and the connection is good at the gas valve , then if this going out could be 1, powerunit on gas valve not holding at thermocouple connection

2. Hole in heatexchanger blowing out pilot when blower comes on

I take it the pilot stays on untill fan comes on and keeps going out , I would think about not putting any more money in to this and get new if sounds as the heater has had its day ,

Not staying lit

Remove the front panel and tape down the door safety switch so the unit can turn on when door is off. Turn up thermostat to make sure there is a call for heat. The circuit board should indicate a call for heat with either a blinking light or a solid light. Then the exhaust fan should turn on clearing the venting from any fumes. When the fan has ran for a few seconds, the igniter should start glowing orange. After it reaches a predetermined temperature, the gas valve should open with a click. The flame will start at the burner closest to the igniter and travel away from the igniter. There is a small flame rod located in the flame path on the last burner that tells the circuit board it feels the flame. If the flame goes off within a few seconds of starting, you have a dirty flame rod. Clean it with a scotch-brite pad. Once you get the flame to stay on for 90 seconds or so, the room air blower will turn on. If it tries 2 or 3 times to start but does not, the circuit board will record a code and display it with a blinking light. Look on the door panel for a wiring diagram. There will also be a Diagnostic chart that will tell you what the pattern of blinking lights represent.

Good Luck!

When I turn my furnace on, the purge blower starts as normal, then after 15 seconds the ignitor starts to glow but when the gas valve should turn on it only turns on for a split second and then you can...

On a call for heat, the 24 volt thermostat sends a signal to the control module. The control module will indicate a call for heat with a light on the control either blinking or remain solid depending upon model. The inducer (exhaust) blower will purge all gasses from the furnace and pressurize a pressure switch. Once the pressure switch tells the module to continue, the electronic ignition will energize and send 120 volts to the igniter. The igniter will glow and you will be able to see it if viewed thru the small inspection port. Once the igniter gets hot enough, it sends a signal to the module opening up the gas valve (24 volts). Either a pilot will come on or the burner tube will ignite then spread the flame to all burners. Lastly a safety sensor will be looking for a certain temperature within a few seconds and the furnace will continue to operate and the room air blower will turn on in a minute or two.

What could go wrong? The unit will not run if there is no signal from the thermostat (bad thermostat or broken wire), the control module does not sense a signal from the thermostat (bad control), the inducer does not energize (bad motor), the pressure switch does not close (blocked vent piping, bad switch, plugged condensate hose), the igniter does not energize (bad control, bad igniter), the gas valve does not open or there is no gas (bad gas valve, broken wire, no gas), the pilot does not light (dirty pilot), the burner does not light (bad burner, plugged orifice, not enough combustion air), the flame does not spread to each burner (bad flame spreader, dirty flame spreader, more bad burners), the flame safety sensor does not detect flame (dirty or bad flame spreader, bad flame sensor, broken wire, bad control), or the room air blower does not energize (bad fan motor, bad control).

Pilot light wont lit up

Change The Thermostat Cause If Your Getting Gas But The Water Heater Doesn't Detect The Heat It Will Close The Valve. When Lighting You Hold The Button Down For About 30 seconds so the thermostat will detect flame and stay lit. Check To Make Sure The Thermostat Is Where It Should Be. Heres A Picture Of What It Will Look Like.

Pilot and burners

You need to check a couple of things, first is the flame sensor, second is the thermostat. Without anymore detailed info this is the most I can give you.
