Question about Craftsman 42 in. Deck 19.5hp Lawn Tractor

Mower has to be chocked to run

I have a 42" 19HP craftsman riding mower that requires the choke to be pulled out to run. I have changed the in-line fuel filter, removed the carberator bowl and cleaned it, replaced the air filter & pre-filter, blew out the fuel lines, drained the fuel tank and used fresh fuel. It runs great for a little bit( 10-15 min), then seems to load up and require more choke to keep it running.

Oftentimes, this problem is the result of mowers left outside in ambient air that is high humidity. This, in turn, allows algae to grow inside the carb fuel float bowl and/or inside the fuel tank if left out for extended periods (one month or longer). Also the same thing will cause air filters to clog rapidly with mold and mildew - slowly at first, then more rapidly as the mold continues to grow. Get out the carb cleaner in spray cans and go through every ported passagewway in the carb body then reassemble using CLEAN screws, gaskets and all interrior parts. Any residue mold or mildew will continue to grow - and it can grow in gasoline!! Imagine that!!

It still sounds as though there is a passage plugged in the carb or maybe a leaking gasket. The carb is obviously not pulling gas through as designed, which explains the need for choke. Try a rebuild kit, and blow carb cleaner through every tiny passage.

24 hp Briggs Stratton sears riding mower engine wont start unless you use start fluid cleaned filter have flow to engine

If the mower starts and continues to run after injecting, you may want to make sure the choke is working properly. If the choke plate is not closing all the way, it will make cold starts difficult.

Riding mower turns on when the choke is pulled but turns of when the choke is pushed back in. Sometimes it stays on but after a few minutes sounds like it is running out of gas and eventually turns off.

When were the air filter and fuel filter last replaced? Those are the two suspects to cause your problem and unless the mower is pretty new, or they were replace in the last year or two, start with those.

Engine problem

Most probably there is a restriction of gas flow in the carb from varnish, trash or rust. The carb need to be cleaned/repaired.

Craftsman 16 hp 42 in. riding mower won't run when clutch is released

If the engine feels like it is being choked, then something might be catching or bound up...for example the blades may have been installed improperly and will not rotate. Make sure that you can rotate the blades by hand...if not they may have been tightened and are binding against the mower housing.

If there is no engine choking...then it may be electrical for example a bad fault switch...take it to your mower shop.

good luck
