Typically the cause of satellite reception problems. If you have trouble receiving satellite signals and getting a position fix and try and check the weather status if the weather is cloudy garmin gps requires clear sky to work on

Hi,

The problem with the Nuvi 6XX series is the flip up antenna. I rang Tech Support today and they informed me that the antenna is the week link in an otherwise good unit
You will need to have the antenna replaced / repaired .

Just buy an external antenna $8 something from amazon and it will solve the problem. This model has an internal antenna problem. Hopefully garmin will resolve this issue.

Thanks For contacting Fixya

    Appologies.

Upgrading to the latest firmware version has always gotten the Gramin 296 working again when this problem occurs. The latest version is 5.40.

Check out page 11 or the user guide provided bellow:

Garmin Nuvi 610 not Acquiring satelites. it was working fine and while driving suddenly said something about poor reception, now nothing

Hello,

Its sounds like your GPS's internal receiver is broken, you may be able to fix this with a firmware update but it is likely you will have to purchase an external antenna for your GPS to be functional.

Hope this helps!

296 takes forever to acquire satalites.

If you don't use it very often it can take time to find its location. Have you tried using the 'set initial location' option? Once it knows roughly where it is and what time it is it can then work out which satellites it should be looking for instead of searching for any/all of them. The manual does say that it will take time if it has no initial clue as to where on the planet it is, and if you're on the move while it's trying to work that out then it may take even longer. Obviously, if it has a poor view of the sky, or if most of the satellites are behind you and you have a tin roofed aircraft then that will probably not help either.

My Garminis taking a really long time to acquire satellites( sometimes 5-10 min),especially when I flip the top up to turn it on and whenI flip the top down to turn it off ,it acquires the satellites...

are you inside when trying this ? Garmin has a very bad reputation in acquiring satelites when in coverered position.
Go outside and you will notice it goes much faster.
