Question about Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G Router

1 Answer

My motorola surfboard modem will not connect to my linksys router. I can see my wireless connection but I can't connect. Took my laptop to a friends house and it connects just fine. There has to be something wrong with the modem but the cable company won't help because they say it's a router issue. I lost cable service just prior and they ran a new cable. Since then, no wireless. I even bought a new linksys router.

Try resseting your router and then taking off the security...And try to join...If you can't , probably this stuff is junk.

The wireless connection is not working. The only network that shows up is lynksis wich has a waek connection and asks for a password that i have neever had to use before, so i dont know what the password...

Unfortunately the Motorola SB5100 SURFboard is not a wireless device. The Linksys you are trying to connect to is most likely someone in your area and they have it password protected, which is why it is asking for a password.

In order to setup Wireless you will need to invest in a Linksys, Netgear, D-Link, or some other Wireless Router. They can be found at any computer store.

Once you have the wireless router you can connect an Ethernet cable from the Motorola SB5100 SURFboard to the Wireless Router. From there follow the instructions for the Wireless Router you purchased to set it up and secure it.

If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response.

Thank You,
Brandon

Hi, I'm an idiot! PLEASE HELP

you may be suffering from mixed Cat 5 and Cat 6 cabling.
The wiring is slightly different and they don't work well when mixed in routers and modems etc. One or the other will work , but when they're mixed it'll do what you have going on here...

I would recommend wiring everything with cat 6 ethernet cabling. Look on your cable and you will find the labeling on the outer casing.

Motorola SB5100 and linksys router connection

The only thing that you need to setup on your Linksys for it to work with cable is to make sure that DHCP is enabled on the router.  You will need to plug your router into the modem via the ethernet cable and then plug your neighbors pc into a link port on the router (the cable modem plugs into the internet port)  You will also need to follow the reboot procedure.  Power everything off.
1: Turn on the surfboard and wait about 1 minute for the surfboard to make a connection with your ISP (the link light should come on).
2:Turn on your router and wait for your router to sync up with the surfboard . 3: Turn on your computer. Whenever you plug anything into a cable modem, you must recycle power to the modem.  It "remembers" the last device that was plugged into it, so it's memory needs to be cleared.

How do I remove linksys broadband WRT54GS Wireless-G router from my pc. and revert to just my Motorola, SB5101 surfboard cable modem. Tried simply removing the router and pluging the modem back in, but no...

Hi intriguedkiw;

Yes this is fairly simple. Open up your network connections and delete the icon for the local area connection to the Linksys router, and click on Add new connection to create a new connection to the Cable modem. The add wizard will walk you through connecting to the modem, just fill out the questions correctly, and you should be good to go.

Good Luck,

Mark

MY LINKSYS WRT54G WONT READ MY COMPUTERS INTERNET CONNECTION

Ok to start the yellow ethernet port should be connected straight to the Linksys router in the ethernet in port. Then you connect the cmputer to one of the other the 4 ports on the back of the wireless router. wala you shouldn't have any more trouble after that.

Setting Up a Wireless Network

You can still use your existing Linksys router with your cable modem. In fact the router your have is designed to work with DSL/Cable Broadband connections.

1. Make sure to properly connec the devices in your network. Modem will be connected to the Internet port of the router. Then, laptop will be connected to one of the 4 Ethernet ports of the router. For initial setup of your router with modem, you need to hardwire laptop to the router.
2. Press and hold reset at the back of the router for about 15 seconds.
3. After 15 seconds turn off the router and then turn off the modem. Wait for a minute.
4. Power on modem and wait for the lights to be ready.
5. When modem lights are on, turn on router.
6. There should be 4 lights on. Power should be steady green. Internet, WLAN and Ethernet port.
7. Checked if you have Internet connectivity on your laptop while it is wired to the router.
8. If Internet is working, disconnect laptop from wired connection to the router and check available wireless network that laptop can detect.
9. The default wireless network name that the Linksys router broadcasts is "linksys". Connect to it which is an unsecured wireless network.
10. Once you are successfully connected, check Internet.

Hope this helps!

Connection drop-outs

Is your laptop wireless adapter a compatable brand. It doesn't necessarily mean the router is bad, you may even be getting RADIO interference from a cordlees or a cell phone in it's path. Do you have the capability to plug a cat-5 cable directly into your laptop from the router when you lose wireless? Check the wireless channels and see about changing the channel on your cordless phone too. May not work, just a hunch.

Good Luck
