Question about Craftsman Garden

Open Question

I have a mountfield 7 500 (432cc) 20 months old. It will not start. I have checked air filter and spark plug and all is ok.I removed the engine cover to see the starter as when you turn the key it sounds as though the engine "spins"The starter is sometimes rising and engaging but not enough revolutions to turn over. Other attempts see it not moving or engaging at all. Additionally after 6-7 attempts the battery drains?

Change the oil. Thick oil winter can cause it, or over diluted oil too. Got similar issue with my mark 1. Bought it but never ran more than 30 secs. Just drained 8 litres of oil out!!! Glad I changed the carby now. Hope you changed the condenser too. Once the plugs are fouled (may look OK) they are no good so might have to change them again.

It will either be the stator that needs changing or the carb needs to be pulled off and cleaned

It sounds like you lost compression take out the spark plug and screw in a compression tester to check for engine pressure there should be 70 - 90 psi, if you can't buy one put you thumb over the spark plug hole and have a assistant crank over the engine push on the hole pretty hard, be careful not to get a shock from the spark plug wire while cranking the motor, if you feel pressure with your thumb reinstall the plug and connect the spark plug wire proceed to remove the air cleaner and pour a small amount (1 o.z ) of gas into the carburetor hole then try to start if it starts then stalls it is a fuel delivery issue. unscrew the carb float bowl to clear out any water or debree from it. the float bowl is round and is located on the under side of the carb, it should un screw by wraping a rag around it and turning it counter clockwise with a strong hand. also try cranking over the motor with your hand over the carb intake hole this will force any debree to get cleared out of the tiny passages in carb without having to full disassemble the carb this may also get the motor started for you if it starts remove your hand to allow the motor to breath and start/run.

Filter may look OK but it's not if it only takes the cover to choke the engine. Check the choke is opening properly and there are no vent restrictions on filter cover.

Weedeater gbi 20 leaf blower will not start, how do I start it and what could be the cause?

Start procedure is, switch igbition on, lever to full choke, pull until it fires once, do not continue pulling with full choke, move choke to central position, crank engine until it runs, once warm move choke to off, if it refuses to start, drain the fuel tank and re fill with fresh mix, remove spark plug and check for a spark by earthing the plug against the cylinder, if after many pulls the spark plug is dry, there is a blockage in the carb, remove the air filter cover, remove the two allen screws holding the carb on, remove the single screw securing the alloy pump cover, under the diaphram is a filter, replace this filter, rebuild and try again.

WILL NOT START

Ok...time to take her pulse then!

1. Does it have fuel? Look for water in fuel *(check gascan too!)

2. Does it have spark? You need to remove the plug and inspect it. do you see any oil, fuel or even water on the plug tip? You can plug in the sparkplug and dangle it near the metal part of the engine and confirm that the plug makes spark. If it doesnt get another one just to make sure the plug isnt fouled out.

3. Can the engine breathe? Remove the air filter and see if the filter is oil, water or fuel soaked. Is it rusty? Covered in dust, dirt, fuzz or fur?

You can check the engine once you are sure you have spark by putting a splash of fresh gas in the sparkplug hole before putting the plug back in and attempting to start it....leave the air filter off for now. You dont want a bad filter getting in the way right now. If it starts and runs you can put the air filter back on and try to start it....if it wont start....replace filter too!

Good luck and be careful!

I have a old ford 9n and i can not get it to fire . i changed the points ,rotar, plugs and still no fire can u help?????

First thing is to check spark. Hold the spark plug to the engine block with the spark plug lead still connected while cranking the engine. If its working, you should see a spark. Note: Use a insulated pair of plyers to hold the spark plug. If there is no spark, the last thing to check is the electric stop (off switch) which grounds the spark to the body to stop the engine for you.
If you have spark then the next step is simple.

Petrol engines need four things.

#spark
#air
#fuel
#exaust

-to check if its an air problem, remove the air filter and see if it runs
-to check if its a fuel problem, remove the air filter and hold a rag covered in petrol over intake or spray aero-start in the into the engine
-and last for exaust, look for smoke. If you can't see any smoke there could be a block stopping the exaust from getting out and not letting the engine start.

In final a engine needs all these factors to start and run well.

Your carbeurator is crudded up. Get a can of aerosol carbeurator cleaner at any auto parts store. Remove the air filter and spray two squirts of cleaner into the air intake. Start the engine and keep it running by squirting more carb. cleaner into the air intake. WIth a little patience you will clean your carb. and solve your problem.
