SOURCE: THe ice maker is not making ice. The red light is flashing.

A weird coincidence. Simply taking out an ice container shouldn't cause problems of course, nor should turning off the water to the house. I'll give you my normal explanation of it being either the ice maker or the water valve.

With ice makers it is almost always one of two things. The ice maker itself, or the water valve (valve is located on the backside of the frig, bottom right hand side almost 100% of the time). Figuring out which one is easy, and I will help explain.

First thing is the frig has to be cold enough for the ice maker to even start working. I'm assuming we have the cold part taken care of. Next, the machine will start a cycle and ask for water. Here is where the valve comes in. The ice maker energizes the valve and it opens allowing water to rush up the back of the frig and into the ice maker. After the ice freezes the ice maker goes into harvest and dumps the ice.

In conclusion, you either have an ice maker that stalled at some point during that cycle (in which case you need a new ice maker). Or the water valve is not opening, thus no water enters the ice maker and you get zero ice.

Quick facts: If you have ice in the ice maker and it is not dumping, you need a new ice maker. If it is empty, you have to either wait for it to ask for water or manually advance the ice maker into cycle so you do not have to wait.

At this point you will hear the water valve energize or not. If it never energizes, the ice maker is not working right, if it energizes and you get squat, the valve needs to be replaced.

If you have experience with a multimeter you could detach the harness going to the ice maker and simply hook up your leads. When the ice maker asks for water, you should get 110v reading on the meter. If you do, the valve is bad and needs to be replaced.

If I can be of any further assistance please let me know. good luck!

Oh, and the valve probably sells for between $50 and $100 depending on where you buy it. The ice maker should run between $100 and $180.

P.S. There is a remote chance the filter needs to be replaced. An old filter can cause water pressure issues and you may not get enough water into the ice maker.

Not making full tray of ice

Hello Francois,

Refrigerator set up and adjustment SHOULD be in your owners manual... Sears (service) while usually pretty PRICY ($$$$) on the SAME parts you can buy everywhere... maintains excellent records on MOST brands of refrigerators (make & model required).

~~

To define EXACTLY what you have...
MAKE & MODEL data is ESSENTIAL (not doing so = costly).

On most TYPICAL ice maker heads... (depending on your make & model (which is not presently included here)) there are a couple of minor adjustments ... TYPICALLY.

Some have weeny teeny screws (requiring cover removal AND knowledge WHICH WAY DOES WHAT...other ice makers have quite obvious controls.

- one affecting the duration of the water valve (ergo fill).
- another affecting the trip temperature (ergo hardness/doneness).

If your cubes are too small you can increase the flow duration... up to and PAST overflow (make little adjustments, use patience)

If your cubes are hollow or partial... and usually mal formed or stuck together (decrease the trip temperature (you can significantly drop (or terminate) your ice production with aggressive adjustments in this area
(again: make little adjustments, use patience).

If you are in doubt.. it would be MUCH WISER to get the EXACT information... Ice Maker replacement heads can be quite expensive even from the bargain providers...

Good luck.

Ice maker does not seem to produce ice as fast. Is there a switch to increase/decrease amount?

No. Make sure the condenser coil on the bottom is clean, make sure the cooling fan for the condenser coil is working. Make sure there is enough clearance for air to reach the fan intake. Temperature of incoming water may affect the speed of Ice production if it's warmer.

Electrical hot smell from fan area, not has quit

Hello, electrical hot smell from the fan area means you have a burnt fan which inturn affected other parts of the ice maker. That is the reason why the ice maker fails to start up when you plug it.
You can only fix it by replacing the fan and probably other affected areas by troubleshooting it.
There is nothing like reset.

Take care

The ice maker is making 1 tray of ice a day

There are 3 things needed to make proper ice.

Water, cold, time.

Check the cubes that are being made, they should be the same size crescent shaped. If they are not solid and some are hollow or broken then you are not getting enough water to the refrigerator. This is usually caused by the little valve on your house piping that connects to the refrigerator being plugged with sediment.

If the the cubes are all solid and the same size check the temperature of the freezer, it needs to be below 10 degrees F and works best below 5 degrees F. If it is warmer than that it will only produce ice on a very slow schedule. If you do not have a thermometer ice cream is a good indicator of temperature. If ice cream is hard the temperature is below 5 degrees F, if it is soft you are not cold enough to make ice cubes either.

If all this checks out alright you may need to have the ice maker replaced. the modular ice makers are available for sale at most all part retailers.

Maytag model MSD2756GE ice maker. Water not getting to ice maker.

Why was there a need to increase the freezer temperature? Are you having temperature problems as well? If so, your ice maker has a built-in thermostat that, unless and until it is satisfied, will not cycle, thereby, making no ice. If temperature seems ok, and the buzzing is only occasional, then that buzzing is most likely the solenoid valve being energized but not passing water. This is a dual solenoid valve (one supplies the ice maker and the other supplies the dispenser) located at the bottom rear of the refrigerator.

Maytag Refrigerator Ice Maker

  • first make sure the metal arm to the right of it is lowered, this turns the icemaker on.
  • then you can check the water supply to make sure it is turned on, sometimes when houses are vacant they turn the water off as a precaution. the valve may be behind the refrigerator or under the sink in the kitchen.
  • then...
The refrigerator has a duel water valve, one for the ice-maker and one for the water dispenser (if equipped). The valve that the ice-maker relies on may be bad, or it could be the ice-maker itself.
Another thing that could cause it would be the temperatures in the freezer. The ice-maker will not call for water until it reaches under 15 degrees. In addition, check the water tube behind the ice-maker to make sure it is not frozen, blocking more water from entering. The water does not go to the ice-maker or thru the filter unless the ice-maker turns on the water valve.

How cold is the freezer? Check the condenser coils for cleanliness and clean if necessary. Condenser may be located in the back behind a fiber panel. Ice maker is dependent on temperature and if the freezer is not reaching a low enough temperature it will affect your ice production.

Hot house,, effect on freezer temperature

cork....this is interesting. First, I'm going to suggest that you remove all the ice from the unit and clean it. Use a hair dryer to melt the ice and then make it dry. Reassemble. Many of these units allow you to remove the ice maker bucket. Don't forget to clean that up. There is a way on many of these units to turn off the ice maker...If you leave it too full, the defrost cycles will melt the ice together causing your problem. On my Kenmore, I keep the bucket about half full. Generally, the preset temp should be 40 in the fridge and 5-10 in the freezer. If either of these is warmer, you have shorter food life. By the way...Mom will feel warmer if she has a humidifier in the house. Get the cold vapor type.

Ice maker freezed up and freezer not keeping items freezed up

Your automatic defrost system is not working which is the indication of the frost on the back wall. When the freezer does not come down to temperature it also affects the ice maker. This kind of problem is from a bad timer, defrost heaters or defrost thermostat. I do not think you want to tackle this problem yourself. Call a service man from an appliance store that handles your product and give him the same information you gave here with the exception of the removal of the frost on the back wall.
