MY briggs engine will start when choke is on but shuts down when you take the choke off

Put in new spark plug it will start when the choke is engaged but shuts off when you dis-engage choke

>>The Float Needle Usually is Not Replaced Unless it is Not Operating Properly (the gas flow not shutting off and the carburetor is Flooding). Do Not Remove the Main Nozzle. This is a Pressed Fit and Removal is Not Required for Cleaning. Soaking and Blowing the Carburetor Out After Soaking will Clean the Nozzle.
>>Once Disassembled, then Soak the Carburetor Body and Parts in a 1 Gallon Can of Gunk Carburetor Cleaner Overnight. The Can has a Parts Tray Inside it for the Small Parts.
>>Once the Carburetor and Parts are in the Cleaner, you can Replace the Lid for Safety and to Prevent Accidental Spillage. Then Blow Out the Passages with Compressed Air.

Now Setting the Air Mixture Screws:

Turn the Main Air Mixture Screw Clockwise Until Proper Revs are Obtained. Occasionally you May have to Turn this Counter Clockwise to Achieve the Proper Revs. Now Allow the Engine to Idle. Set the Engine Idle Screw (Not Idle Air) so the Engine will Stay Running if Required. Now Set the Idle Air Mixture Screw so there is No Hesitation when Throttling from Idle to Full Throttle. Reset the Engine Idle if Required.****
>>If This Carburetor has a Single Air Adjustment (Except Tank Mounted 9200 and 100900 Engine Model Carburetors), Use the Section Above that Pertains to Full Throttle RPM Air Mixture Screw and then Adjust the Screw if Required to Eliminate Any Hesitation when Throttling from Idle to Full Throttle.
>>For the 9200 Model Tank Mounted Carburetor Adjust the Air Mixture Screw Full In, then Reverse 1 1/2 Turns. Set the Throttle Lever to Full Throttle and Start the Engine.
>>Now Carefully Use 1 Finger and Open the Throttle Plate and Over Rev the Engine Slightly. If the Engine Over Revs and Does Not Struggle to Over Rev, then the Carburetor is Set. If the Engine Struggles to Over Rev, then Turn the Adjustment Screw In 1/4 Turn and Repeat the Over Rev Test.
>>If you Adjust to 1/2 Turns In and the Engine Still Struggles to Over Rev, then Return the Adjustment Screw to 1 1/2 Turns Out from Snug and Turn the Screw Out 1/4 Turn. Do the Over Rev Test. Continue this Process Until you have the Engine Over Revving without Struggle.
>>By Adjusting the Carburetor on this Style Carburetor Until the Engine Over Revs without Struggle, you have Adjusted the Air Mixture to the Best Possible Setting.
>>This file was Intended to Give you the Basic Carburetor Cleaning Instructions and May Not Reflect Your Carburetor Components.
>>If you have Questions, Please Ask. The links above Provide Good Directions on Cleaning the Carburetor. Make sure you use an Compressed Air to Blow through all the Carburetor Passages to make sure they are Clear.

Gas in the spark plug chamber should mean it is flooded.trying to start it for too much time with the choke on will do this.when starting cold,engage choke.turn engine over till it tries to start.if you can't disengage the choke before it stalls,do not re-engage the choke.just keep turning the engine over,or pull starting,whichever you have,until the unit starts.it will.for now,if the sp.plg.hole has fuel in it,blast compressed air to clear it somewhat,re-install sp.plug,never overtightening,just snug,and try starting without the choke.hope this is useful.bart.i am a certified small engine mech.and remember when finished,let unit idle for 2 min. Or so and cool before shutting off.change oil religously every 50hrs.for units over 10hp.,every 25 hours for engines below that.they will last a long time.clean air filter after every two or three uses.never empty fuel when storing,use STA-BIL.

Riding mower briggs and stratton engine will start and only run with the choke on and shuts off when i release the brake


hello jw. chances are that you have junk in your carburator. since it will run on choke do the following:
1. new fuel filter.
2. new air filter.
3. new spark plug.
4. get a can of starter fluid and a helper. remove the air filter and spray some starter fluid into the air cleaner area as it is running. do this for a minute and then see if it will run with the choke off. if not, repeat. J.

John deere 135s won't start briggs and stratton 22 hp engine it is getting spark and fuel and I just put new plugs in because the looked fouled.

There are four reasons for fouled spark plugs, 1, You have a resticted air flow ( dirty air filter, or partially engaged choke), so the mixture is rich all the time fouling tghe plugs. 2, You have a poor quality fuel ( old, stale ), and it wont combust/burn hot enough, then fouling the plugs. 3, You might have a piston ring failure causing engine oil to be left on the cylinder wall instead of being wiped back down, and then burning as part of the combustion process. Thus burning and causingg a rich condition again, and fouling the plugs. Then finally number 4, low engine compression. This is again caused by worn cylinder walls and worn piston rings, causing compressed air/fuel mixture to leak past the rings into the crankcase, and when the fuel/air mixture is compressed then ignited, some of the air needed to ignite the fuel has escaped, and thus a rich condition again, fouling the plugs.


Determining which of the Four are causing you fouling is your next step.

Briggs and stratton runs good for 5 minutes then starts to smoke


My first thought is that the throttle lever is being pushed so far forward ( max RPM's ) that you are running the engine 1/2 or better choked
Look at the choke butterfly with the throttle in your normal run position it should be completely open
This may require and adjustment in the control rods or might be as simple as not pushing the throttle wide open

Replaced stop switch and it still won't shut off!


While attending college, I worked at a tool rental center and learned many tips and tricks from the mechanics. The problem that we heard the most from customers was that the machine would not start. Your your machine at least starts and runs fine, however will not shut down with the factory kill switch. Many times when replacing the mag. (spark coil) the kill wire would rub against the flywheel and break or over time the conductor wire will break inside the insulation. If you kill switch only has one wire, then all the kill switch does is short the mag to ground. Simple test is to remove spark plug, re-connect wire to plug, touch plug to engine and pull rope to observe spark, then short the tab on the magnito to ground, should be no spark. If you still have spark, coil is defective however good enough to run engine. Kill with choke or pull wire. If no spark with test, make new wire from tab of coil to kill switch or any switch that will short tab to ground. Good Luck

put a small amount of gas in carb from top and try it. if still not starting make shure choke is in closed position . check the safty switch handle . you do have spark/ and gas
